Yo, what gives?
Mother Nature is making a liar out of me. A few weeks ago after a particular chilly morning, I predicted a cold and snowy winter. I predicted a winter for the record books. I believe my exact words were “I’m thinking it might be one of the harshest winters we’ve had in quite some time.”
And right on cue, we’ve had mild temperatures in the high 60s and 70s. Um, hello. Mother Nature? You trying to turn me into a liar? Do I need to run down to my local police station and put out a Missing Person’s Report for Autumn? Who kidnapped Autumn and when can we expect it to be returned?

It’s not easy bein’ green!
It gets better. I went on a local trail near me over the weekend and, well, the trees looked like Ireland in the summer. I half expected to hear a melodic violin, harp, or flute. The trees and bushes were greener than Kermit the Frog, the Grinch, The Incredible Hulk, Oscar the Grouch and Shrek put together. Of course, I wondered. What had become of the orange, red, and yellow leaves? Was someone messing with the chlorophyll? For extra measure, where was the pumpkin spice and full moon? They weren’t in the woods.
Peak foliage in Pennsylvania generally occurs in mid-to-late October, though the timing varies by region, with the Pocono Mountains and northern areas peaking earlier (early to mid-October) and central and western regions, like the Allegheny National Forest, often peaking in mid to late October.
Things are not looking good! Mother Nature is late and she’s in a mad rush. She’s running out of time. She’s like a delivery driver rushing through her route. She skips one house. She leaves the wrong package at another house. She’s more interested in the clock than providing great customer service. Tick, tick, tick, time is money.

Looking like a fool
The temperatures haven’t helped either. It got up into the 80s (Fahrenheit) this weekend. We sat on the deck in t-shirts and shorts and felt quite comfortable. I could’ve sat out there all day and well into the evening. It’s supposed to hit 82 today. Mother Nature must really be trying to make me look like a fool.
I’m onto her though. I know what’s going to happen. We’ll get a soaking three- or four-day monsoon this week or next. Just like that, all the leaves on the trees will fall to the forest floor and turn a crinkly brown. They’ll crunch when you step on them. The next day, it will be cold as heck. We’ll skip right past Fall, “rumblin’, bumblin’, stumbling’” headfirst into Winter. (All credit for that line to ESPN Sports Announcer Chris Berman.) Another day we’ll get an early snow. The poor weather will catch me off guard. I’ll have no milk or bread and I’ll become an angry hermit stuck inside for months at a time until Spring’s return.
Mother Nature needs to get with it! Time is of the essence. The leaves need to change colors over night. If Mother Nature doesn’t get with it, then I need to move to a warmer climate. Anyone have a secluded island beach house for me?
Who’s with me? Who’s wondering what happened to Fall? Here’s an All Points Bulletin: Has anyone seen Fall?

Yes. The weather has been doing the opposite here too. Today, it was warmer than expected. Coats still needed. But only light ones. Wear the fleece under your waterproof jacket and you will feel hot.

Yes I went for a walk today …. Wanted to rip my fleece off after ten minutes. Ha ha

Oh you are spot on. I’m giggling because the marketing gods started with the pumpkin spice everything push right after Labor Day. Truth is I love pumpkins and everything Fall but I can’t wrap my head around crisp comfort foods while I’m still in flip flops and shorts. At this point I won’t be into a closed toe shoe until Halloween if this keeps up. Loved your piece Brian!

Exactly. If I lived in sunny Fla or Cali, maybe I would feel different. But that’s what I love about fall … shorts and a sweatshirt, a hot coffee taking away the edge, and the leaves to keep my interest. If it’s gotta be hot then I want the full beach scene! Ha ha! ☀️🍁🍁🍁😎😎😎

That is it. Oh well, at least my laborious task of switching over the summer to fall/winter garb is on pause! I don’t even want to shop for long sleeved anything with these temps.

I haven’t even started that yet. I figure the temp has to figure out where it wants to settle first. Ha, ha.

So clever, Brian! We caught fall here this morning. You and your wife need to c’mon over to the PNW.

Oh heck with it. I’m moving Wynne. I’m tired of PA’s crazy weather anyway. Fall is the best time and it’s 80ish today. Good grief. Ha, ha. Crazy.

I thought we finally had fall with two monsoons in a row. Then we went right back up to the 90s. At least we have cool mornings in the high 50s and los 60s. So much better for walking. I checked my phone and starting Thursday we have six days of rain!

Oh here comes the Monsoon. Ha, ha. I’ve been trying to get out now while I can. I feel like the rainy week is coming and all the leaves will be gone then. Ha, ha, gotta love it.

Predictions for a colder winter may not be far off. My co-workers have been telling me that when they look at the inside of the acorns, they know it’s going to be a harsh winter.

Yes, well Fall is messing with my big prediction Belinda. I went for a walk this morning. It was cold early, but by the time I was done, it felt like July. C’mon on Mother Nature. Let’s go, let’s get with it. Ha, ha. Oh it will come soon enough. ha, ha.

I’m still looking for fall myself. Highs the last four days have been 82, 86, 87, and 82. At least today it’s “only” 78. Pass me a sweater, would you?!

I’m trying to prepare myself. It’s going to go from 82 to 42 in no time. The same with green leaves to barren trees. No in between ground. Ugh. Ha, ha.

LMBO Brian! 😂😜🤣 Mother Nature has certainly thrown us a curve ball too! She never ceases to keep us guessing! We’ve had yo-yo weather here too! Fall should be here around Christmas I think! 😆

That’s when I’m expecting it to show up. Ha ha, maybe for a day or two and winter willl take over!! 😎😎😎

Oh my gosh Brian, I am so feeling ya! You gotta laugh, because uncertainly seems to be the norm these days! LMBO! 😂😜🤣

What do you call it when uncertainty becomes the norm and certainty becomes a rare thing. I know that sounds like a joke or a punchline, but I find myself asking that often Kym. Crazy times when even Autumn decides to hold off. Ha, ha. Of course, just as I wrote that on Monday, it got colder. The leaves still look very green to me . . . but I think our last 80 degree day has finally passed. Ha, ha.

Brian, Mother Nature always baffles me. This morning it was 54 degrees. Now, let’s talk 70’s and quite possibly hitting the lower 80s later this afternoon. 😲
Honey, I don’t really think I get too excited anymore with the unexpected! 😱

Ha, ha, yes Autumn is a mythical season. It’s talked about in low whispers by old timers. Oh I kid! Yes, I love fall for the pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pie, and other wonderful foods. But I’ve always loved the changing of the leaves and how nature changes over from summer to winter. It’s definitely different this year. Here in PA the temp was in the 80s today. The average high this time of year is usually in the 60s. At least sweatshirt weather. Ha, ha. Yes, I want the mythical fall to return. 🙂 🙂

Oh I’m in good company than. Where is fall Beth. I was hoping you were going to tell me that Michigan has it and isn’t letting it go. I’m told that it’s supposed to get a bit colder over the next week or so, but good grief. It’s October. Where’s the leaves? Where’s fall. Ha, ha.

Hi Brian
Here, the weather is like it should be, 16 C and the leaves are colourful and falling down. The sea is still quite warm, about 15 C. Weather like usual.
All the best and wishing you a real autumn

Oh that sounds lovely! I’m on my way! Ha ha, I’m kidding. Oh, I’m sure the temperature will drop soon enough. I just love autumn and everything that comes with it. The leaves will eventually turn. I suspect we’ll just have less time before they fall. Thanks for letting me vent. There’s no changing the weather, have to take what we’re given. Have a great day! 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎

Since late August, I’ve been drinking Pumpkin Cold Brews, eating Pumpkin Muffins, and simply waiting on the weather to catch up. I agree Chris Berman’s line might be quite appropriate to Mother Nature’s immediate future when the weather does catch up, Brian.

This is so funny, Brian, but I’m wondering the same thing! Our temperature gauge outside reads 90 degrees! We’ve had some warm days, but the evenings have been nice, like the one in my poem. 🙂 But I’m so ready to greet Autumn, so I can relate to your words…
“Who kidnapped Autumn and when can we expect it to be returned?”
I hope she arrives soon for both of us! At least we saw her in CO. last week. That was a treat! 🍁

I really hope she arrives soon too. I hear it’s supposed to get colder this weekend. I just worry that all the leaves will fall before they have a chance to change colors. Ha, ha.

Oh you guys get real winter Ab. PA winters can be fifty fifty – either a wimpy one or we’ll socked in with snowstorm after snowstorm. I just feel like we haven’t had much of fall yet. No changing of the leaves. 80 degree temps. Ugh.

I was feeling exactly the same way, until today. The tree at school, OMG. It wanted to say, “Hello, fall is here.” I will have to post it.
