Happy Ten Years!

This past June, I was driving late one evening. My mother had a bad fall and was recovering near her home in a rehab hospital. We had visited with her and I was driving home. I was tired. I hadn’t had much time in front of the laptop. I had a million thoughts racing through my head.

I worried that I would forget all the things I wanted to write. Somehow, in that cacophony of alarm bells in my head, I started to think about the creative process. I pondered its give-and-take nature. From those morsels came my attempt to be humorous and write about my own writing process. In July, I published my post The writing process: The long and winding road. The night before it ran, I remember thinking that I kind of liked the piece.

Playing favorites

I liked that I touched on the challenges of editing your own work. I liked the jokes. I liked that it touched on some gallows humor, but overall was still positive and encouraging about being a blogger.

I liked how it made me feel.

Oh, to be clear, I’m like a parent about my work. I love all my children equally. I can tell you about the birth of most everything I write. Was it hard? Was it easy? Where did I get the idea? Did the writing come fast or slow? But some pieces stick with you longer. You remember them well after they’ve been published. For whatever reason, I found the writing process story to be funny. I was pleased with the every-man quality of the piece. In the end, I might not have entertained all that many readers, but I amused myself.

Bring out the cake and candles!

The piece sticks out even more to me this week because I’m celebrating my Tenth Anniversary blogging on WordPress. In my first year, I published once or twice a week. I did that for a while. Later I published daily. Good God what was I thinking! I’ve backed off of that aggressive schedule. I’m blogging three days a week now. I write that with a caveat. Additionally, I rerun one of my pieces on Tuesday and post a simple gratitude post each Saturday.

My milestone has me thinking about the things I love about blogging:

–The anticipation of putting together an interesting piece that comes to me and seeing what others have to say about it ranks as one of my favorite parts of the blog experience. I get an enormous amount of joy and wonder seeing the different reactions — good or bad, positive or negative — to something I’ve written. It’s like I’m a newspaper reporter again. I stop by the local Dunkin Donuts or some other coffee shop. I watch folks skim over the day’s newspaper. I love seeing their reaction to whatever story I wrote for that issue. I’m putting together a puzzle and when I’m done I get to look at wonder at the finished piece of art. It could be a Monet or van Gogh. Or the neighbor kid’s chalk painting that will wash away in a day or two.

–When something happens in the world, I like having a place to turn to say what it means to me. It could be the big stuff, things like world news. But it’s the small things too. A driver cuts me off. Instead of keeping the anger inside of me. I know that I can vent on my blog. I can give the other driver a funny tail or a green ogre face and my readers will understand. I like that I have a place to vent.

–Storytelling has given me confidence to try new things. I can tell a story about something that happened to me and see if others can relate. I can try out new styles of writing. I can collect my writing thoughts for future use.

–Novelist Jodi Picoult had the perfect response to writing. She said, “You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.” She summed up another reason why I love being a blogger. It keeps me learning and gives me something to edit and improve.

–My confidence as a writer has grown tremendously since I’ve started blogging. I know now when I’m on a roll. And, I have confidence in myself to get back to that place. I’m like a trail guide or a Sherpa. I have a map and know the way back to me.

Here’s to ten more years of writing.

  1. Happy Anniversary! I enjoy your posts and like to read other people’s thoughts on writing and blogging. I have bought a couple of books – Stephen King, On Writing, and Anna Quindlen, Write for Your Life – that talk about the process.
I think about topics all the time – but need to write them down so I don’t forget!

    1. Great books. I have to read On Writing again. It’s been a while. Love that book. I’m not much into horror, but absolutely love how King talks about writing. So down to Earth. And I haven’t read Writing for Your Life, but love other things that Quinlen has written. And thank you so much for the kind words Nancy. Very much appreciated.😎😎😎😎

  2. Congratulations on 10 years, Brian. That is quite a milestone, and really impressive that you still arrive at the page every week with such joy and fresh ideas, and you are still finding new readers 😉 I haven’t posted in a bit because of illness and just general malaise, but this is definitely inspiring me to sit back down and write. Thank you. And, hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Oh Jessica, I hope you’re feeling better. You may have been sick, but look at your month 8 or 9 of blogging, right? Very cool. Love where you’ve gone with your blog. Yea, anniversary pieces are fun, but it’s the day to day pieces that I think touch readers the most. Anyway, thanks for stopping by and coming back. And yes, hope you have a great weekend too. In PA, it’s supposed to hit the 80s. Suspect fall is coming fast. Ha, ha.

      1. Thanks for the reminder – yes I have been doing this for 8+ months, and no AI! It’s all me, thank goodness. This weekend was great – lots of outside time, big community festivals happening, and it’s finally, actually fall. We were shivering at the bus stop this morning, but it will be 75 degrees by this afternoon! Love this dramatic weather. Have a great week.

  3. Happy Anniversary with your blogging.

I felt joy coming off this post and I smiled with it.

WordPress is a good place. As we have all said many times over, it’s the community here. And it’s great that we can write what we want, whether it is to vent or share an experience, or something positive and engage with the community.

    1. Ya gotta take your shot, right. Love Picoult and Gretzky’s mindset there. The reminder I give myself often is that I need to put myself out there. Yea, I may risk a few things, but I’d much rather risk looking silly or stupid rather than not trying to begin with. Thanks so much for the kind comment and coming back to read my blog. 😎😎😎😎

      1. I’m a Capricorn, so I am cautious…but it is true, you can’t succeed if you don’t try…working in entertainment, I have many “on camera” friends and hearing about the almost daily process of auditioning, meeting, reading for roles – lucky to get 1 or 2 out of a hundred tries…you really need the thick skin to survive

  4. Congratulations on this milestone Brian! Here’s to many more years. I loved reading your post. I’m just now getting back to blogging and finding my niche to write about. I’ve done other things in the past but want to switch it up. I know writing is a long and winding road 😉 and have to discipline myself to stay the course. Your post is an awesome reminder that it’s possible.

  6. Congratulations on your 10th blogging anniversary! This resonated with me: “When something happens in the world, I like having a place to turn to say what it means to me.” Yes, and that’s one of my reasons for blogging. This space is awesome, and the ability to interact with others and share ideas is priceless.

    1. I would probably be in the looney bin without blogging. Definitely helps with life’s craziness. Ha, ha. And thank you for the kind comment, but like I’ve mentioned in a couple comments, I’m winging it when it comes to content. I know what I like to read. I’m just trying to mimic that. So, yea, I’m winging it. Fake it until make it, right? Ha, ha.

  7. Congrats on your blogiversary! All the cool kids stick it out a long time. Here’s to at least 10 more years!

The writing process fascinates me too. I blog twice a week, every 3-4 days on average, and that seems to work for me. I’m not sure if you read Ally Bean, but she wrote an interesting post this week on regular blogging prompts (like your simple gratitude posts), and that’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. She (and you) might have provided just the inspiration I was looking for.

Now, about this blogging anniversary…where’s the party, and will you be providing an open bar for guests? At least tell me there’s cake…

    1. Oh, I inspired you . . . no freaking way. Ha, ha, I do read Ally Bean. Love her look at things and I can’t wait to see what you do with the prompts. And yes, there’s a big party. You have an open invite. The party starts when you get it here. Open bar and yes, maybe even a big old cake. Gotta celebrate and get some new ideas for new posts!!!! I’m running out of ideas here. Ha, ha. 😎

      1. Just say it: “because I’m an idiot.” I always start slow in January. I’ll start off planning two blogs a week. Slow and steady. And then by mid January, I start to get a backlog. Instead of putting a few in the can and giving myself a break, I add more days to my publishing schedule. Next thing I know I’m up to five days a week. What the hell. Idiocy. My plan is to back off in December. We’ll see if I can keep to it.

    1. Oh thank you Kim. That’s so great to hear. I know you’re busy, I’m so glad that you enjoy reading them. One day I’ll collect the good ones into a book. Thanks for reading. Great to hear from you too. Hope all is well! 😎😎😎

    1. I love the way you phrased that. It really is a snapshot in time. I like to look back and see what was going on my life during a particular month. That’s how I started re-running some of my old pieces. I saw them and thought I may as well do something with them. Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

so much to enjoy here and I really loved the Jodi Picoult quote – “You might not write well every day, but you can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.”

(And I loved the link you made in this post – between editing and “gallows humor”. Gah. Yes, yes!) 😜🥰😜

      1. Your journey sounds perfect! I’d say as long as you are writing and reading and staying engaged, you are growing as a writer. Do you ever write about your novel in progress? I haven’t done that much. So many reasons to keep it safe for now. Whatever you are working on, I send you my best wishes for your enjoyment, flow and success.

      2. I’ve shared my WIP with a few folks but I haven’t published it on WP. Maybe I should think about that. I have to get over that hump of holding my novel inside. Probably would do me some good to share it more with others. Maybe it would help get me to the finish line. It’s been a busy year outside of writing, I hope to get back to the novel later this fall/winter. Thanks so much and congratulations again on your progress. So cool that you’re working with an editor.

  12. Happy 10 Year anniversary! EVERY DAY A NEW POST! YIKES! So many of your points resonated with me – thanks for clarifying what is sometimes a jumble of thoughts in my head. I also love the Jodi P. quote – so very true. I started 5 years ago with my first blog about COVID – and there are days when I say, should I stop – but I keep going – this post helps…. V

  13. Happy anniversary. Sticking with blogging for a year is pretty good but ten, that’s amazing. I agree with you blogging has made me more reflective and more purposeful. When I look back at some posts, I wonder what was I thinking and others simply take me back in time. I love your reflection. It’s awesome. Keep at it. Enjoy your weekend.
