The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, August 3-9.
What I’m grateful for:
—We made it. Getting a text or call that a loved one has made it safely to a far away destination.

—A well-earned rest. A cozy bed, fluffy pillow, and cool sheets. Excuse my yawn. I’m getting sleepy just thinking about my rest!

—Simple thoughts that move us. Henry David Thoreau’s classic Walden, or, A Life in the Woods was published 171 years ago today. Like many people, I had to read Walden when I was in high school. I’m afraid much of the wisdom was lost on me then, but I’ve come to appreciate his simple, folksy humor. I may not understand everything he states, but I certainly have a deeper respect for it. Here’s some of what I mean:
- “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
- “Things do not change; we change.”
- “However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults even in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.”

- “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”
- “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
What gave me a smile?
—It’s a doggy world. I’m excited for my blogging friend Lauren Scott. She published her new poetry collection, King Copper, Our dog’s life in poetry, this week. The collection details how Copper, a lovable chocolate lab mix, came into her family’s life and never let go. “From the hugs, cuddles, and games of fetch, Copper learned to trust us. And so, he became family. For thirteen years, he gave us unconditional love. He crossed over the rainbow bridge this past March.“
We lost Nittany, our 15-year-old Lhasa Apsa – Bichon Frise this past winter, so I can relate to the feeling of love and loss. I understand when Lauren writes in her intro: “It is serendipitous to know that he came into our lives in March and left our earthly world also in March – the month of new beginnings. He was a bright light in our lives that will shine eternally. This is the power of our dogs or any pet. They leave a positive, long-lasting imprint on our souls.“
I can’t wait to read the collection. You can find it on kindle and paperback on Amazon. Check it out!
The timing of Lauren’s book made me laugh.
We have a new grand puppy in our lives. Our son is the proud pet owner of an 11-week-old English Bulldog. Hello world, meet Panzer. Panzer meet the world. My wife and I aren’t ready to be dog owners again. This little guy and his crazy puppy ways, though, has started to get us thinking about it. Who knows? In the meantime, we’re enjoying seeing the world for the first time through Panzer’s eyes.
And what a wonderful world it is.

you’re lucky to have panzer as your grand-dog, at first I read it as pant-zer, as in people that fly by the seat of their pants, kind of my self included, and that would would work too. ) yes, to Lauren’s new book, I’m sure you can identify with what she went through and she’s such great writer

Hi Brian, I woke up to find your ping back waiting for my approval, and what a surprise! Thanks so much for mentioning my book, and I know you can relate to the unconditional love of a dog and how much heartache is felt when they cross over the rainbow bridge. I hope you love the book; you’ll feel joy, maybe laugh a bit, and it’s also an emotional read. But we know that Nittany lives in your hearts forever and Copper lives in ours. We’re not ready to be dog parents again either, but seeing Panzer makes me smile big. He’s adorable. Enjoy your grand puppy for now until the right time comes to welcome another canine into your lives. I always love reading your Big Three, and today’s resonates: getting that long-awaited text (definitely!), a good night’s sleep (wish it would happen more often), and Henry David Thoreau’s wise and profound words. Thanks again! I’m going to reblog, and have a good weekend! 🤗🙏 🐾

Oh, I’m so glad you liked the mention Lauren. I’m sorry for taking so long to respond this morning but I’ve been on puppy detail. Our son had to go away this weekend. Let’s just say I’m worn out already. Ha ha, panzer is keeping us on our toes! We’ll probably adopt another dog one day … but we’re enjoying things as is right now. I’m so happy for you to see the response that you’re getting for your poetry and the book. Just in the few poems I’ve seen so far you’re speaking for pet lovers everywhere. I can’t wait to read more!!! 🐶🐶🐶🙏🏼🙏🏼😎😎😎

It was very nice of you, Brian, and no worries. We just got home from a Gravenstein Apple Fair. 🙂 So I’m catching up. Aww, I’m sure Panzer is keeping you on your toes. He is so adorable!, but I’m sure he has lots of energy! Like you and your wife, and though we miss Copper so much, we’re enjoying the ‘bittersweet’ freedom. We will adopt again, just not sure when. Anyway, thank you for your kind words. The outpouring of love for Copper and support of my book has been unexpected, but very much appreciated. I can’t wait to read your thoughts after you’ve read the book. Have a good evening, and give Panzer a hug for my family. 🐾🤎🙏

I love this big three, Brian. But Panzer steals the show. Now I can’t even remember all the witty things I was going to say about Thoreau. Oh, dogs do that to us, don’t they? I love your shout out to Lauren and King Copper. Yep, dogs win the day!

Maybe Panzer could learn a few things from King Copper. I’ll have to read it to him. He’s a handful! Ha ha. But yes dogs rule and the rest of us drool or something like that! 🤣🤣😎😎😎

Panzer makes for a good story. I suspect I’ll be writing about him more in the future. Ha ha. And yes, I love Walden’s words on a well-lived life! So inspirational.

As you know, I recently spent almost 3 weeks away from virtually all civilization, except for animals and those who live around them…we discovered that when you turn your safari jeep engine off, the Kalahari desert has NO SOUND…pure blissful silence, except for the birds that will talk to each other and warn of approaching danger…or the soft rustle of a baby elephant chewing on a tree…peaceful serenity, just like a walk in the woods would provide….here’s to a peaceful easy weekend!

No one around, just the animals, and silence of nature … sounds amazing John. Thanks for sharing that. Love your pieces so far on your trip. And yes, here’s to a calm, peaceful weekend! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🤣😎😎😎

I have enjoyed so many outings at Walden Pond, loved reading these reflections and quotes. When I first started working in non-profit, I bought woodcut print with the last quote you shared on it. It has helped me get through many hard days! Thanks for sharing.

I just pulled up some images from Walden Pond — looks lovely there! I think that’s the interesting thing about his wisdom: it keeps offering new and deeper insight each time I come back to it. Thanks for commenting Jessica.

Congrats to your poet friend! And falling into cold sheets and atop a fluffy pillow after a long day is one of the best feelings in the world!

Such a beautiful post. I got teary-eyed thinking about losing my Olive cat last November. She’s visited me in some dreams lately and she gives me a strong look that says, “What are you doing!” Also, my mom loved Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden.” She was always quoting from it. More tears! Thanks for the double whammy! Have fun with the new pup.

Oh wow, Elizabeth. It’s amazing how our pets can have such a huge impact on us. And I think that’s what I love most about Walden – how the words draw out such strong emotions. Thanks for your comment. Hope you have a great weekend.

Following Lauren, I know how much she and her family loved Copper. Thanks for the mention. Panzer looks like a character. And finally, I reread Walden every few years. One of my favorite books.

Thanks for your comment Curt. It’s amazing how pets like Copper and even Panzer in these short few days can find a way to burrow in our hearts! And yes, I love to come back to Walden. It’s like an onion, it reveals more and more wisdom each time I read it. 🙏🏼😎😎😎

Total agreement on both points. Our lifestyle doesn’t support a dog. We travel too much and it wouldn’t be fair to the dog. Age and experience always add new layers to Walden. Time make me want to live in an isolated cabin. Grin.

I say I want to live in a cabin, but I would probably go stir crazy after half of a day. Ha, ha. Thanks for your comment Curt.

I would certainly need things to occupy myself with. A couple of hundred books (and a dog) would be a good start!

The dog is my son’s. He recently completed six years of active service and completed his enlistment in the Marine Corps. He wanted a name that represented how sturdy Panzer is. He really is a lil tank. I swear he’s gained 10 pounds in a few days. His paws are huge too which make me think he’s got a lot of growing left in him. Uh-oh!
