The Big Three: Just because

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, July 13 – 19.

—Sunshine and Rainbows. This one’s simple. Pure beauty. Love these.

—Sweet Corn. It’s that time of year when corn on the cob is generally at its peak, with the most abundant and flavorful options at grocery stores and farmers’ markets.

People who check on you, just because.

I’ve never attended a Star Trek convention and I can’t imagine ever attending one in the future. I can’t repeat scenes or dialogue from the show or movie.

Still, I love how the series handles things like friendship and hope.

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Spock’s final words to Kirk, as he dies from radiation poisoning, are: “Don’t grieve, Admiral. It is logical.” He goes onto say, “I have been, and always shall be, your friend. Live long and prosper.”

Later, as Kirk mourns, he says, “Of my friend, I can only say this. Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most human.”

Gets me where it matters most every stinkin’ time.

  1. For us, the good corn is only now starting to come out. It’s at its peak in August. Now, with the GMO, they plant earlier and later to try to extend the life of it. Still, I am getting a hankering for some now! I believe (I hope) I am getting some in my “Odd Bunch” delivery this week!

It’s good to take the time to look for thing for which to be grateful. I do it every night. Small things, silly things, big things. They all add up.

  2. Rainbows, sweet corn and loved ones that check in on you. You fired on all cylinders this week, Brian! 💕 Fan conventions are like stepping onto another planet. They’re wild but can be a lot of fun. I encourage you to check one out if you are able to – with the kids too!

      1. I’ve been to a few prior to T but less so now. They’ve also become very pricy. Will wait till T is a bit older to take him to one. I think he’ll find the cosplay community fun!

  3. I plan to pick up some sweet corn from a local farm stand next week. That might possibly be my favorite thing about summer.

I couldn’t quote any Star Trek dialogue either. I’m more of a casual fan. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is probably my favorite.)
