I met up with a friend for coffee. I worried that she was going to have some bad news. When we had last talked, she had told me that she was having a tough time at work. She feared she was on thin ice. We had worked together years ago and I knew her to be a great worker. She cared a lot about her work and always brought a lot to the table.
She told me that her boss and her had been having a few issues. They didn’t connect real well. He was a stickler for details and on top of that, the company wasn’t doing well. So when she texted me about getting together, I had no idea what to expect. I tried to get some hint of how things were going, but she didn’t bite. She simply told me that she had some news.

Let’s talk
It turns out that she had some news and then some. Her boss had pulled her into a meeting and asked what was wrong. He noticed that her work had been suffering. My friend admitted that she had been struggling. Her mother had taken ill and she then on top of that, her own health had taken a dive. She thought she was keeping things running at work. However, she recognized that she might have let a few balls fall.
She feared that the next thing from the boss would be a “see ya later” wave. He had a certain old school way about him. She expected that boss’ next move was to can her butt during an already crazy job market. But she got something altogether different.
The boss offered her grace. He said he understood. He had recently gone through something similar with his own family. He asked if she needed some time off and if there was anything he could do to help. My friend said that she was completely shocked. It wasn’t what she expected to hear from him.
My friend talked about how it made her feel seen. Her face lit up as she told me the story. She said she felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She specifically called out the word Grace. It’s a word that I keep seeing lately. I saw a motivational speaker touch on it recently on social media too. I looked the word up and I’m still not sure what it means.

A word with a complicated meaning
Grace is a tricky. It’s one of those words that we know it when we see it. And we certainly know it when we don’t see it. But forget about trying to explain what the hell it is.
I think it means “to be.” To be courteous of others, to be kind, to live and let live. I hear it mentioned a lot to give yourself grace, that you’re not perfect. To give yourself a break.
There’s the religious element too, to have God’s grace. In particular, God’s saving grace. It certainly means to say thank you.
In the end, I’m not sure I understand the word any better now. I do know the times though when I’ve felt it. It made me feel a mixture of joy, happiness, and satisfaction. It made me feel good about the people I was with and good about myself.
Here’s to more grace in our lives.

That’s a nice turn of events! So glad your friend is getting support. Adding job searching when things are tough, selling yourself when you’re struggling, is so difficult to navigate. Nice he recognized that. Gives me hope or humanity… 😊

I had the same thought. It’s one thing to deal with struggles. It’s another to throw job loss on top of it. It’s still early, but she sounds like she’s doing much better. Her eyes were definitely opened to what kind of boss she has. 🎉😎

I hope I hit the meaning. A tough nut to crack. Ha, ha.

I wish more people were understanding like that. We all need a little break now and then to deal with tough times.

A sign of a good leader who recognizes his staff have needs and issues to deal with. I have always liked the word grace.

I thought the same thing Darlene. A good leader understands that workers bring their whole selves to the workplace. And responds to help them. I know her eyes were opened to her boss. 🎉😎

How wonderful for your friend to have an empathetic boss. Grace is a word that I love and has so many connotations but when we hear it, we know it’s the right one. Not clear but I think you know what I mean 🙂

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. It’s a hard word to pin down. It’s like the word “the.” How do you explain it. But you sure do feel it when we hear it used appropriately. Thanks Dale.

“There but for the grace of God go I” is an expression I always liked. Grace is a hard word to pin down but it’s one I especially like.

I love that expression too. Still tough to explain, but I still love it. Ha, ha.

Yes, yes, I’m with you LA. Speaking of grace . . . or my lack of graceful transitions, the Phillies and Mets are playing this weekend. Should be an interesting series!!!

Yes, I don’t know what to expect. Phillies won last night. Could go on and lose the next two to the Mets and ten more. I wouldn’t be surprised. Already a crazy year.

I’ve had some leaders like that and some not so good leaders too. Definitely prefer the leaders with grace and a deft touch!!!

You are so right that it is a tough feeling to describe. I love how you’ve done it with the story and with this, “It made me feel a mixture of joy, happiness, and satisfaction. It made me feel good about the people I was with and good about myself.”
Beautifully done, Brian! Here’s to grace!

Oh, I had to use the story, because I’m not sure I could describe “grace” without it. It’s such a hard word to explain or describe. Thanks Wynne. Hopefully I got close to the meaning.

Beautiful post, Brian. Grace and kindness go such a long way. Not all bosses are like the one your friend had and I’m glad she had this moment at a time that she needed it most. 🙏

This is really a beautiful post with a wonderful story, Brian. I like how you’re honest in not being able to explain its meaning. But I agree with you in that when we should give ourselves grace, I think of being kind and forgiving to ourselves. I feel good after reading this post, so thank you!

I hope I nailed the meaning. I’m not really sure if I did. But I do find that I’m drawn to grace … how we should give ourselves more grace! And I’m glad that the post made you feel good.

This story made me remember asking my older brother when I was a little girl what Grace meant. I didn’t understand what receiving God‘s grace meant. He said it was the best thing, that it was receiving good things – love, forgiveness, etc. – even if we didn’t deserve it. That has stuck w me.

Oh, I love that response. Good things even when we don’t deserve them. I can see why that would stick with you.
