The Big Three: Vibing

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, April 27 – May 3.

—Early mornings. We have an early morning airport pick up this morning. To get there we need to leave before the roosters even think about getting up in the morning. I’m grateful for the pitch black night, the rising sun, and the possibilities of a new day.

Airports. Speaking of airports, I love them. Everyone complains about how hectic and crazy they can be. They complain about the Transportation Security Administration pre-check. Meanwhile, there’s me. It doesn’t matter if I’m squished like a sardine into my seat or just picking someone up in the recent arrivals lane, I’m like a little kid on Christmas morning. Yes, I probably need my head examined. I get excited walking into the building. I love the thrill of flying to some new place and the hugs and kisses of greeting loved ones just off the plane.

Kindred spirits. Sometimes it’s great just knowing that others feel the same way as you. English actor, comedian and writer Brett Goldstein, known for his role as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, talked recently about his experience working with on Sesame Street.

“I say this without irony, this is not a joke. I mean this with every bone in my body. It was the best day of my life.”

I’m grateful to say that I have similar feelings as Goldstein. Sesame Street is the best. I grew up on Sesame Street and love that it’s the one place that kids can go and parents don’t have to worry about what they’re going to be watching.

(After I wrote this note, I saw that President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday that seeks to cut public funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service. Of course, PBS runs Sesame Street and other children’s shows. Ugh.)

There have been moments in recent months where I feel like the time has come to give up my cellphone and social media. I don’t need the frustration and anger that comes out of the little box. And then I find something like the video below and my faith and love for people is reborn.

Check this out.

Last fall, I found this video of University of Texas Swimmer Kelly Pash getting ready for the start of her race by dancing to Justin Bieber’s song Baby. Pash starts out dancing by herself and singing to the song. It’s just her getting into the song. And then she turns and sees the DJ vibing along with her. She puts her hands in the air and gets even more into the song.

I have no idea why it touches me. Perhaps, the huge smile on Pash’s face? Outside of the Summer Olympics, I don’t watch much swimming. And, I’m not much of a Justin Bieber fan. I don’t recall the song when it first came out in 2010. But, every time the video comes across my feed, I feel better inside.

I could watch the video for hours on a continuous loop. It makes me incredibly happy. It reminds me that life can be hard and even challenging, but laughing and finding your groove makes things better.

You go Kelly.

  1. Agree with you 100% on early mornings and airports. Husband and I love going to airports and airshows. We’re going to a local Fly-in today. So exciting! ✈️🛩️

  2. I’m catching your vibe, Brian! That’s a great video of Pash – isn’t it funny that social media seems to throw out lifelines to keep us reeled in just at the right moment! Here’s to airports, early mornings, and kindred spirits! Thanks for the pick me up post!

    1. Oh yea, my wife laughed at me when I mentioned the song. She’s like “you realize that’s ten years old, right.” I’m not a Bieber fan either but I just love Pash’s excitement and happiness. It’s how I hope others might see me when they see me listening to “real music.” U2 or some other 80s group. Ha ha.

  3. Airports, especially early morning visits, can be abuzz with the best energy. 🙏 So much excitement, whether departing or welcoming someone back. Ahh, wish I was going to one now too. 😆

  4. I most appreciate your commitment to finding gratitude, Brian. From it, we receive joy – and that’s the good stuff of life!

And, yeah – it’s a blessing and privilege to travel by airplane. Even with all the “inconveniences”.

Enjoying others enjoying life is a pretty sweet feeling. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I thought of you when I posted this. I thought swimmers get serious as they start to get ready but maybe this is a common thing??? Either way, I love the joy!! And didn’t that coach win the national championship this year. I thought you wrote about that. Maybe I’m dreaming!!!

      1. It depends on the swimmer. Some are very serious and others deal with their nerves by dancing and singing. Yes, Coach Bob Bowman won NCAAs. He was Michael Phelps longtime coach before he coached at the university level. He was at ASU the prior year and won there, too. Then he took some of his best swimmers from ASU to Texas. ASU was a failing swim program. The men’s team had been cut. A few years after Bowman took over they won NCAAs and they now have a great men’s team.

  5. Oh my goodness. Yes. There’s something about the energy at the airport. I can’t put my finger on it, but I hear you, Brian and Kelly’s dance – getting her groove on? Imagine if there were cameras on us when we’re writing? I have a feeling you and I would be bouncing to the same faves. 🥰😎🥰

  6. great choices this week and I love early mornings too, and airports for people watching, but not if I’m in a rush to get somewhere. I also love Brett g, he’s so funny and charming, both! have a great week and I appreciate you –

    1. Oh, I can be a pain about getting to airports early. A huge pain about it. I hate that late feeling you get about missing your plane. I always worry about losing my seat or being stuck in city traffic getting to the airport. Ugh. But once we’re there, I love that part of people watching and seeing the other passengers.

  7. I love your choices, Brian, and I loved watching Ted Lasso (we watched it 3 times). You shared 2 great videos, and I had not heard about funding being cut for NPR. No words. Anyway, thanks for the smile.
