The Big Three: Tongue in cheek

The world can be a crazy place. Sometimes it helps to step back and list a few of the things you’re grateful for. I’m making it a habit each week to list three blessings. Here’s what I’m grateful for this week, April 6 – 12.

Coloring outside the lines. On Albert Einstein’s 72nd birthday in 1951, a birthday celebration was held in his honor at the research center where he worked. United Press photographer Arthur Sasse caught Einstein as he was leaving in the back seat of a car and tried to persuade him to smile for the camera. Einstein had been smiling for photographers all evening. Tired, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist instead playfully stuck out his tongue.

Sasse captured the moment and it became one of the most recognizable images of Einstein and one of the most iconic photos in history. Einstein reportedly liked the photograph so much he asked for copies. He gave one copy to news anchor Howard K. Smith writing that “A civilian can afford to do what no diplomat would dare.” He gave another to a friend and wrote that his outstretched tongue “reflects my political views.” Einstein, who was Jewish, had fled Nazi Germany and knew what it felt like to be the subject of a government-led witch hunt. Thanks to that, he did not condone the Cold War or Senator Joseph McCarthy’s search for alleged communists.

For me the photo says much about politics in our society, but it also says much about creativity. It makes me grateful for the ability to think outside of the box .

Orange crush. Fresh, squeezed orange juice and toast. Perfect.

Smart planning. In the 1980s TV show “The A-Team,” the leader of the band of outcasts and ex-special forces soldiers, John “Hannibal” Smith, regularly expressed his satisfaction when a carefully planned operation succeeded. He would take a deep sign, let out a big smile, and say, “I love it when a plan comes together.”

I like to schedule some time together with my wife every few weeks to compare our upcoming calendars. She rolls her eyes at me. In face, I can feel her rolling her eyes at me as I write this line. Let’s just say, I can get a little obsessed over the calendar. I guess I have a little Hannibal in me. When we’ve gone over our calendars and haven’t forgotten any last minutes dates or events, I always feel more organized and on the ball. Yes, I love it when a (good) plan comes together!

I might be the only who finds this statistic on the power of brotherly love amusing. Something tells me, however, that others will like it too.

Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Aaron Nola primarily throws four pitches: a four-seam fastball, curveball, sinker, and changeup. In his career, he has thrown a total of 10,000 fastballs. Nine of them have been 96 mph or faster.

A total of nine pitches.

It gets better. Of those nine fastballs clocked to be 96 mph or faster, three were thrown to his brother Austin Nola.

In total, Aaron has faced his brother, Austin, a total of six times in the regular season, with Austin managing a hit, a walk, and two strikeouts. When they both made it to the National League Championship Series in 2022 and faced each other in Game 2, they became the first brothers to face each other as pitcher and batter in MLB postseason history.

Competition between brothers. Oh, there’s nothing else like it. The thrill of victory and agony of defeat take on even bigger meaning.

    1. Yes, my mother used to tell us as kids that there was always something to grateful for. I’ve been running my Saturday Three Things post since the start of the year. I usually have more things to post than open spots.

  1. I like that you do this every week so I’m joining in. The three things I’m grateful for this week:

    1. My hubby returned home safely from a motorcycle trip from Spain to Germany (and brought me nice gifts)

    2. My mother-in-law is now in a care facility closer to me so I can walk over to see her every day if I wish.

    3. I was able to pack away most of my winter clothes and bring out the summer things!

I also love it when a plan comes together.

    1. Oh, thank you for sharing Darlene. Really cool. I’m not a motorcycle guy, but that sounds like a really cool trip. Maybe I need to take up riding. Ha, ha. Yes, glad that he made it home safely. And good luck with your mother-in-law’s move. I know those things can be tricky. Finally here’s to the spring and summer. Can’t come fast enough! I keep reminding myself that I’ll be complaining about it being too hot before you know it. Ha, ha. Here’s hoping you have a great weekend.

      1. Thanks, Brian. Hubby’s been riding motorcycles since he was about 14. I used to ride along with him (as a passenger) and we had some great times. Now I stay home and write books (and look after the dogs). I’m glad he is still able to do the trips. Have a great weekend yourself.

  2. I never knew how that tongue picture came about. Thank you so much!!!
Secondly, I also love a good plan and it would be wonderful if my husband would sit down every few weeks so we can go over the calendars ! but his eye rolls are quite large also !

    also love the baseball reference!

great way to start the day on a Saturday morning!

    1. Oh, I’m used to the eye rolling thing Vickie. My wife gives it to me too. Ha, ha. It doesn’t help too when I forget about things she’s mentioned for the calendar and I forget to write them down — like the baby shower today that she told me about and I completely forgot about. I kept sending her ideas for things we could do and she’s like “didn’t you write down that I’m going to be busy.” Ha, ha “Oh, yea, that’s right. Um, have fun.” Ha, ha.

  3. Thanks for posting the background about the fantastic Einstein photo. Funny that I never wondered about the background of why he was sticking his tongue out. The photo was just fun. But I like that Einstein did something different after an evening full of smiles 🌞

  4. I love these three but I’m fascinated by the Aaron Nola story. Out of 9 balls over 96mph, 3 were to his brother. That’s a really high percentage of the 9 to any one person, right? Brothers bring out the best in each other?

  5. love the bro stats, and my friend told me that she and her husband tried implementing a ‘let’s each give each other a compliment at dinner each night’ initiative. her two sons were at odds one night and one was really struggling to come up with a compliment for the other. he finally said. ‘I like your knees.’

  6. Staying grateful is awesome.

M grateful all of my kids are under one roof and I don’t have to worry from afar.

I’m also grateful ti be up for 3 hours in the middle of the night to have some time alone. Lol.

I best catch some rays before the light shines to wake me! 💕🙏

    1. I am the king of the rabbit holes. I was looking up something on the web. I stumbled across that image. I’ve always liked and started reading about it. Next thing you know I’m digging into the history and how Sasse got it. Voila I have something for my Three Things post! Need some Useless Trivia, I’m your man. 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎

      1. Not useless…I love the backstory! Another reminder of why Einstein was so, so brilliant. His personality and demeanor – from things I’ve read about him – seemed so accessible to the rest of us…the mere mortals.
Keep going down those chutes, Brian. Love it! 🥰

  7. It’s interesting to learn about the history and reason for the Einstein photo. I did not know and how fun! It’s nice when someone so revered doesn’t take himself or his fame too seriously!

  8. I always wished there was a real-life A-team, and I wished I could be on it. The A-team theme song often plays in my head when I need a plan and have to get things done.
“If you have a problem… if no one else can help… and if you can find them… maybe you can hire… The A-Team.”

  9. Great list and info. about that Einstein photo, Brian! I like to have a plan too, but we’re finally at a time in our life when we can be a little spontaneous, which is also kind of fun. I’m thankful for so much, including this wonderful blogging community! I have to remind myself to focus on the good and not so much on the appalling in current times. Thanks for the smiles! 😁

    1. Yea, great point about the need to be spontaneous too. You gotta leave room for that too. It usually leads to fun. And you’re right, we’re much more able to be spontaneous now than ever before in our life. Ha, ha.

  10. But how do you like your toast? Lightly toasted or scorched? How about toppings? Butter, jelly, jam, peanut butter, cream cheese, or some combination? Inquiring minds want to know.
