I’m a goner.
The odds are not looking good for me. Here’s what I mean. Take a look at some of these facts that I’ve collected from across the web.
–Around the world, women live longer than men. Some research suggests that women may have a natural advantage due to factors like the double X chromosome, which can compensate for potential gene mutation. This is true not only for humans, but also for many other mammals. In fact, female mammals live an average of 18.6% longer than their male counterparts.

–People in Monaco, Japan, and Singapore live the longest. Monaco may be the second smallest country in the world, but its citizens live an average of 89.4 years. Where does the good old U.S. of A stand? We suck. We have a lifespan of a mere 80 years. Oh brother, that’s strike two.
–In the U.S., people in Hawaii tend to live the longest. A significant portion of residents in Hawaii report eating fruits and vegetables daily, and a large percentage have access to parks or schools within a short distance. Yes, mark that down, reason #551 why I need to move to Hawaii or Florida or somewhere warm and sunny.
–People who keep a healthy diet, exercise and have access to healthcare have the lowest mortality. I knew it, I knew it, those extra pounds are killing me. If you haven’t been paying attention, that’s gotta be strike three for me. I’m a goner, just biding my time until the grim reaper or merchant of death or angel of death, or whatever you want to call death, comes knocking on my door!
–Several other studies have pointed to marriage as helping people live longer, but who the heck knows. One recent study found that people who stay single for their entire lives may live the longest. Oh great, just when I thought I had something going for me, they take it away.
–Another study found that people who live the longest tend to have positive attitudes, are emotionally aware, and are conscientious. They also tend to have good social networks, eat a plant-based diet, and exercise regularly. Let me repeat that. Good social networks, positive attitudes, and exercise regularly. That doesn’t sound like me at all. Oh, just shoot me now.
There are lots of things against me. But I’m going to follow Mark Twain’s lead and remind anyone who will listen that “my death is greatly exaggerated.” I have a one huge factor in my favor! Yup, it’s called the revenge of the short people.
Bet you didn’t know about it.

While the relationship between height and longevity is complex and not fully understood, some studies suggest that shorter people may, on average, live longer than taller people. Take that Randy Newman. Remember him? He was the singer songwriter who wrote the 1977 song, Short People, as a satire on prejudice in our culture.
It may have been satire, but tall kids in my school in 1977 sure had a lot of fun with it!
Anyway, as my luck would have it, Japanese, Hong Kong, Chinese, and Greeks, who are generally shorter and lighter, have been among the longest-living populations. For once, my smaller size is helping me.
Oh, I can’t figure it out. Living or dying . . . the hell with it. I don’t care. I’m taking it one day at a time.

Ha! Yep, we can’t calculate accurately in these tings, because genetics play into it all. A lot of my relatives developed cancer, including my niece who died at age 16. But then, her childhood was brutal.”
I think of what a dear friend once said: “If you don’t drink coffee you’ll live XX% longer. If you don’t worry you can live XX% longer. If you eat this and this you’re apt to live XX% longer. That gets me up to 130 and I don’t want to live THAT long!”

Yes, I did think that as I was writing my piece. I wouldn’t want to live so long that it’s no longer fun. I was reading about one woman who made it to 122. That sounds too long to me! Ha ha! Some very good genes! Ha ha

So many giggles. Especially your long list of reasons – 551 – for moving to Hawaii? Hilarious! 😜🥰😜

551 reasons, right? Ha, ha. Of course, it was in the 70s and 80s in Pennsylvania this weekend. Mother Nature is playing tricks on me for writing that!!!!!

Same here…70s turned into the forties! 😜

Yes, what’s up with that. Mother Nature: “Psych. Suckers!!! Think we’re moving onto Spring! Think again! I’m in control!”

I know it’s an island and would get old and be expensive as hell but … there has to be something to it. Sunny days, beaches. Paradise, right? Ha ha. I’d probably drop dead the first day there. I’m kidding.

I live in an expensive island. How much different could it be?

Ha ha, I did think that when I wrote that. Gotta be about the same $$$. You’d be trading one island for another. You’d have to give up the shows and museums but you’d get Kauai and Maui and beautiful sun rises and sunsets, and tropical paradise. Hmm, decisions? Ha ha

Longevity is definitely in my family, and we are short.

Short people unite. Tall people might have the height, but short people have a longer life. Love it. Ha, ha.

My great grandmother lived to 102. My grandfather will be 90 this year (I think I’m correct with that one). Yes, taller people may see up higher, but we see more overall.😉

Ha ha, I love that! I’m average height … but my son who skies over me likes to poke fun of me. And yes, no idea where he got the height. He looks like me. Otherwise I might need to be asking questions. Ha ha.

Then you read about someone who lived to 104, drinks and smoked every day and never exercised…always someone to mess up the curve!

Yes, yes, exactly. No rhyme or reason to things. Crazy. I joked with my wife though that it’s all the more reason for us to move to warmer locales. If no rhyme or reason, then best to enjoy it. 🤣🤣🤣

That’s a GREAT point! I will tell you that watching a sunset on the Pacific Ocean does things to my psyche that HAS to be good for me! That’s an important point: the way you feel emotionally has a huge impact on your health physically…I think that’s a topic you write about a lot in different ways

Here’s a post idea for you John. Like you need me offering ideas!!!! Comparing the two areas. I know you’ve written some about that but I find the “bi-coastal living thing” fascinating. I’m rude as heck for suggesting posts for others but the change in attitudes and cultures (laid back vs fast paced) on such regular intervals has to be interesting!!! And yes, you hit the nail on the head. My emotional state has a huge impact on my health. I think that’s why I write so often for myself! The readers think I’m writing for them … but it’s really to convince myself! Ha ha

I like that idea! Thanks for the suggestion! Just the fact that when you are in New York you walk very fast and are always energized, whereas in LA you can gaze at the ocean and chill out…I will play with that and credit you for the idea! Thanks!

No need to credit. I just think it’s got to be something that’s noticeable to someone who makes that trip a lot. It hit me when we were there two years ago … There was the same traffic as the east coast (maybe more), but a laid back attitude too that I didn’t expect.

As a family, we are on team short and we live forever. We are talking about living well. We believe in dying with our boots on – in our nineties and onward. 👍

Oh, I love that attitude: “We believe in dying with our boots on – in our nineties and onward.” If I have to leave, that’s a good way to go! Ha, ha. Thank you!

Speaking as someone who loves summer, I agree with you, the move to a Hawaii may be just what you need to expand your longevity. 😊 Or maybe I’m just trying to convince my hubby of this….

Oh of course we’re trying to get our spouses on board with the idea … but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a great idea!!! Ha ha. Unfortunately my wife thinks I’ve lost my mind! 🤣🤣🤣😎😎

What are the stats for how long funny people live? I bet that predicts that you will have a very long and happy life. No matter the stats, you have the right attitude – one day at a time! 🙂 ❤

I gotta check that out!!! Gotta be something out there on crazy people and their lifespans!!! Ha ha! Ya gotta have the right attitude, right? I think so!!🤣🤣🤣😎😎

I do agree with the stats on short people. We had a neighbor in Palm Springs who was barely over 5 feet tall. He lived until 104. But it sure was scary having him driving down the street, barely peering over the steering wheel in his hundreds!

Yea, I think I’d be avoiding him too! Ha ha. Need a few more pillows there friend … so you can see over the steering wheel? Ha ha

In that case, this optimistic 5’8″ guy who was born in Hawaii should live a good long time too! But I draw the line at plant-based diets. Where’s the fun in that?

I had a laugh over this. I think this was a long exposition to rationalize your proposal to your wife to pack up and move to Hawaii! You can do it, Brian.
All kidding aside, so much to think about. Genetics. Diet, exercise, sleep. Environmental factors. So many factors at play. But I do think mindset plays a lot into it as well as social connection too.
Good luck with overcoming all the odds, Brian!

Ooooh, you’re onto me Ab. My writing is always my sneaky way of moving away from cold as hell during the winter and hot as heck and mosquito plagued Pennsylvania to somewhere that is either tropical or fun to call home. So far, no luck. Ha, ha, but hey, I just gotta keep at it. And yes, I’m wtih you. I think the over-riding factor is mindset. I hope it’s that … I’m pretty sure my few social connections are going to be one of those things that kill me off. Thank goodness for WP or I would be in deeper do-do than I already am. Ha, ha. And thank you so much for the luck. I’ll convince her one of these days friend. One of these days!!!!!

I enjoyed your humorous take on the statistics surrounding longevity. You cleverly weave together various studies and facts poking fun at your own situation while also highlighting the complexities of predicting lifespan. The revenge of the short people was a delightful surprise and the Randy Newman reference added a fun touch. Thanks for sharing your lighthearted perspective on a serious topic.
