500 choices and nothing appealing

My wife and I were both spent the other night. We were tired and just wanted to grab a glass of wine, maybe a beer, change into pajamas or sweats, and chill on the couch to watch a movie or show that wouldn’t tax our brains and would help us ease into the night.

I dreamed of relaxing all day. I couldn’t wait for it. My meetings seemed to drone on and on, but I told myself to hang in there. Relief would soon be here.

Liam Neeson taking care of business

Of course, when the time came, my wife searched first through Netflix. She went across one aisle and then another and another. It was like we were grocery shopping looking for that one last ingredient and were coming up empty. Nothing looked all that interesting. For a brief second, she moused over Schindler’s List. Now it’s a great movie. It won the Academy Award in 1994. But, it’s also a movie that I knew we needed to approach with the right attitude. We looked at each other. Neither of us was prepared for the emotional turmoil and tears the movie would bring.

Next my wife pulled up the movie Taken. She must have been in a Liam Neeson mood. I was fine with it, but she wanted something a little more touchy-feely. Of course, it didn’t help that I gave my best Neeson impression, repeating his famous line from the movie:

“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career.”

He continues on: “Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.”

Getting nothing but dead air

My wife shook her heard. I couldn’t tell if she was shaking her head no to my impression or the movie. The impression was really good. It had to be the movie. She zipped by the next set of movies as fast as she could. Bruce Springsteen wrote and performed the song 57 Channels And Nothin’ On. He must have had our night in mind when he came up with his song.

Coming up empty, she switched to Amazon Prime. We were twenty minutes into our search and still hadn’t found anything that really appealed to us. She scooched past a few straight-to-streaming-TV movies that would’ve probably been interesting to me if I had any chance to look at them. We still couldn’t find anything that appealed to us.

After 15 more minutes, I finally decided that I had enough of this searching game and was going to go to bed.

Some days it works that way. Of course, I couldn’t help but wonder if my wife had planned it that way. With me out of the picture, she ended up watching a bunch of CSI, NCIS, Blue Blood TV murder type shows that I would’ve never agreed to!!

I guess I lost that battle! Oh brother.

  1. it can be a huge challenge, with so many choices and nothing appeals, especially when sharing the tv viewing time with someone else, trying to find that sweet spot or perfect balance of something that you would both enjoy. ongoing challenge –

  2. It is often hard to find something both of us like. Usually one of us has to compromise or go to bed! Fortunately we both like period movies. I knew he was the right guy for me when he was happy to watch a Jane Austen movie!! (He watches the Liam Neeson movies on his own)

  3. I have never subscribed to a streaming platform, though I did used to watch the occasional Amazon prime movies a few years ago. Over 2 years ago I turned off my subscription to cable, so my TV hasn’t even been turned on since then. Most of the time, I don’t even think about it. When I DO think about it, I remember that there were only a dozen (yes, 12, I counted) channels in the 150+ available with my Comcast basic cable plan that I would watch. Except for rare instances, like this year’s Superbowl that I didn’t have the ability to watch, I really don’t miss it. I only watched about 3 hours a day when I did watch TV. But…my books and I are in a continued committed relationship and I’m very happy with it.

  4. I love Neeson’s speech from “Taken”…memorable!
I listened to an author the other day talk about AI related to streaming services and algorithms…serving up what “it” (assisted by our prior viewing habits) thinks we’d enjoy and he had the same lament. Too much of the same stuff and then ‘decision paralysis’ sets in. Umm…lemme find a book to read. 😜🥰😜

  5. Haha – “The impression was really good.” I’m sure it was. 😊 Fortunately, me and my sweetheart like similar type shows – action/adventure/superhero. Yet we’ve had similar experiences, 500 choices and nothing good to watch. 📺

  6. I am with you and your wife with too many choices and nothing to watch. I find myself in that dilemma most of the time. My new go to is a SONY neckband bluetooth speaker. I put on an audible book on my laptop, wear my neckband and relax and listen. My husband can watch TV, and I can relax with a book and we don’t hear each other’s programming.

  7. Augh, that’s awful, when you’re in the mood for something specific but can’t find a match for your emotions. It’s even tougher when two people try to get it right together! Well, maybe next time you’ll find the perfect movie.

  8. I totally understand! It seems like I do this search all the time when it’s “show” time for my kids before bed. I’ve taken to keeping a list of the movies that people have suggested. My latest one includes Angels in the Outfield, Miracle, and A League of Their Own. How’s that for a list? 🙂

  9. I don’t know what happened too my comment here. I’ll try again and hope it isn’t a duplicate. There are too many choices, and I think that’s why movies don’t seem appealing. I got headphones from SONY That I wear around my neck. The sound goes through the collarbone. I’ll listen to a book on Audible while my husband will watch his adventure programing. I can’t hear his TV show and he can’t hear my book, but we can be in the same room. Or, I’ll resort to an old fashioned book and go in another room to read.

  10. Sounds like the conversation at my house. I am way more flexible. Last night I wanted to watch a move but the service was showing basket ball instead (even On-Demand) so I watched Despicable Me 4

  11. We just watched “Taken”. It was a great show and we both love Liam Neeson. Our movie watching has improved since my husband took charge of the remote. I lost control of it a few months ago when I picked ‘Catnado’. If you haven’t seen it, don’t. It was as bad as it sounds.

    1. Oh my, that sounds like an errr, interesting movie. Ha, ha. Yes, we go back and forth like that too. My wife will pick a bomb and I’ll get control for a while. And invevitably, I’ll pick a real loser and she’ll take back control of the remote. Ha, ha. It’s funny how that works. We’re always looking for the diamond in the rough. Ha, ha.

  12. Taken is one of my hubby’s favourite movies. We could watch that movie over and over again. Liam Neeson became an unexpected action start thanks to that film. The sequels weren’t bad either!

  13. I grew up hearing the saying of “[large number] of channels, and there’s nothing to watch.” So it is kind of funny that we’ve reached a similar stage with streaming services now too. Hehe. Granted, at least with streaming, when we’re able to get the opportunity, we have the option of selecting the shows that we’d like to see.

  14. Hello Brian, you described a scene in our home. We’ve been reading more and more lately. I found your lovely blog through Lauren and your review of her children’s book ‘Cora’. Jane x

  15. 😂😂it’s the same here , it always took us ages to decide what to watch and by the time we do it’s late and we just want to go to bed. That’s one of the reason why we now tend to pick series with lots of seasons so at least the pain of choosing comes less often😉
