Snow day: Learning online!

Little kid voices carried up the stairs. I thought for a second that my wife had turned on the television, but I knew better. One kid wanted to know how long they were going to be out from school. Another was trying to catch the attention of one of his friends. When the chaos seemed out of control, my wife’s voice came across loud and clear.

“Okay everyone, we’re just waiting for everyone to jump on. Let’s use our inside voices and be respectful of everyone else,” she said.

I’ve heard my wife’s voice in countless situations over the years. I’ve heard her when she’s happy, sad, surprised, half-awake, and in a million other situations. This one was clearly her authoritarian and teacher in charge voice. I automatically grabbed my pen and paper and sat up straighter in my seat. The kids knew they better be listening and on their best behavior too. The errant voice or two instantly stopped talking.

Let it snow, let it snow!

We had a snow and ice storm late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. My wife’s school district decided to hold a virtual day. They chose this option rather than have the bus drivers try to traverse the icy roads. This would have been unheard of back in the day. In the days since Covid, it’s another tool in the school district’s toolbox.

During this session, my wife jumped into the online classroom where all the kids joined from the comforts of their home to read her class There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover! The story, of course, is a twist on the old classic. Instead of swallowing a fly, she swallows a clover, a butterfly, a daisy, and ends up meeting a leprechaun. Oh what a story.

I strained to hear the story. Did I hear right “clover?” I thought about sneaking down the stairs to get in on the fun, but I didn’t want to interrupt the class. I needed to make a few phone calls for work, but I decided they could wait another 20 minutes or so. I needed to know how the story ended. Did the old lady need her stomach pumped out? Did she eat some kale to go with that clover? Was she really a deer or a rabbit? I could hear a voice or two chirp up at various points, but most of the kids in the class were as spellbound as me listening to the story.

Above and beyond

I hear lots of news reports coming from Washington, D.C. about how President Trump and Republican’s want to get rid of the Department of Education. It seems to be the next big shoe to drop. I have my concerns about Trump’s plan, but one thing I hope we can all agree on is that great teachers are a remarkable thing. They’re dedicated beyond belief and need to be cherished and rewarded.

On a crummy virtual day, my wife could’ve easily just gone through the motions. For her though, education isn’t a job, it’s a mission.

Later I couldn’t help but listen as a she worked one-on-one with a one little girl who’s having problems reading. My wife’s work day had ended for all intents and purposes. But there she was, still working with the girl, well past the closing bell. She listened to the girl as she talked about her favorite hobby, high fashion.

You could hear it in the girl’s voice. She adored my wife because she listened to her and helped work with her on the areas where she needed attention. Most importantly, my wife listened to what was going on in the little girl’s life.

Yes, I would agree that education needs our attention. Still, I would also argue that we don’t deserve the teachers we have. There’s some amazing ones out there.

  1. Bravo for committed teachers everywhere! I’m not sure how closing down the federal Dept of Education is an effective way of paying attention to education, but what do I know.

  2. Straight to the heart, Brian. So much to worry about right now regarding the DOE and other essential agencies. A perfect post to make me smile, despite the madness. Especially this line – your reaction to hearing the “teacher’s voice” in your house: “I automatically grabbed my pen and paper and sat up straighter in my seat.” 💕💕💕

  3. Lovely story Brian. We had an online day too here a couple of weeks ago. Covid definitely killed off snow days. Your wife sounds inspiring,Brian. Now i want to be a storyteller too 😁

  4. Oh, I love this post. And can relate because my kids just did two virtual days because of snow here too.

Great teachers make all the difference in the world. We absolutely adore our teachers and how they inspire us over and over again. I can only hope that the same effect I saw with Covid happens again if 47 messes with the DOE. At least from what I saw, parents stepped up to show the teachers how much they love and support them.

Three cheers (and more) for teachers! Please give Kath a hug for me and my kids!!

  5. I am from a family with a lot of educators. The teachers I had, cared and listened and responded to our individual needs and nowadays they are far and few between. I applaud the heart that your wife had for her students. But, so many teachers who “have the experience and merit” are so underpaid it’s not even funny Brian.

I was volunteering at one of our local elementary schools about 10 years ago and I dropped off for Valentine’s Day, a goodie bag for each teacher, worker and administrator in that school. I had one of the secretaries tell me, that some of their staff have to go to food banks because they are so underpaid and can’t afford their basic staples, yet they still cared about the kids. That was not just heartbreaking for me to hear, 💔 but it was infuriating that teachers with degrees aren’t appreciated as they should be. 😠

In our area when school is back in session after summer break, we had and still have a shortage of teachers because many are finding that they can make more money at a retail job. Heartbreaking! Yet, with the dismantling of the Department of Education we are setting this country up to the dummy down standards certain unqualified leaders are imposing on the public school system, colleges, and universities. UGH! 😝

    1. Thank you for sharing this Kym. You are so right. I love sports as much as the next person but our values really are out of whack. Teachers should make 6 figures and athletes should make what teachers make now!!! And yes, I’m not surprised to hear that you volunteer or that you have teacher blood in you. It comes out in your writing!!!!!✍🏽 ✍🏽😎😎😎

      1. Awwww my sweet Brian, thank you for your kindness my friend. I agree that our teachers should be valued more than they are. 👩🏼‍🏫🙏🏼👩🏼‍🎓 I wonder where the billionaires are when it comes to imparting money into good quality education for our children and not just theirs. I appreciate you my partner in comedy! Cheers to a wonderful week ahead! 🥰💖🥂

  6. I agree that there are marvelous teachers. There are also ones who shouldn’t be in the field. My mom and aunt were teachers and they cared about their students. I think truly caring is the difference.

  7. I’m convinced that few people are more selfless than teachers. Working after hours is just further proof of their passion. I’m glad more districts are embracing virtual learning rather than putting students at risk when the weather is bad.

  8. My daughter in law is an incredibly involved 4th grade teacher. After school’s were back in session but still offered remote learning, she taught remotely because of her ulcerative colitis. It definitely kept her safe! A snow day here doesn’t transfer to a remote day. We just take a snow day.

    1. She’s my ticket to anything good in this world or next!!! “Oh, you’re with her, oh right this way!” Thank God she takes pity on me and lets me come along for the ride. I gotta be honest Belladonna— I don’t know how I haven’t messed it up. Ha ha. I’m laughing because that’s true!👍🏼😎😎😎😎😎

  9. Hats off to your wife! I love reading the There Was an Old Lady books in class. Though honestly, children need to be outside on a snow day, not in front of a computer. Sigh!

  10. I’m not gonna rant about Trump, Brian. It’s so tempting and you’ve got me riled up!

But you’re right, teachers are so awesome. They do so much, often at their own time and expense, and they deserve all the funding and support in the world for their life changing work. It boggles my mind that Trump – sorry – wants to make America great and yet doesn’t see the correlation between good education and good society. Shake my head.

By the way, as much as I love virtual learning, the district should just have called a snow day. Let kids be kids … and give teachers a break!

    1. Some bad writing on my part Ab. I should have explained that the kids got a snow day and a two hour delay the previous week. I’m all for snow days … but I was even understanding that they made it a virtual day. And yes, don’t get me started on Trump too. I’m trying not to make every post a political one, but he makes it very hard not to!!!!

      1. Not bad writing. I’m a little loopy today so probably missed something so obvious! 😆 And yes, so hard not to be political these days!

  11. As a fellow spouse of a teacher, I hear you. So sweet of your wife to stay on with that little girl and listen. Good teachers are incredibly valuable. And how fun for you to hear another side of your wife. ❤
