Sharp dressed man

I am a product of the ’80s.

American rock band ZZ Top’s release of the song Sharp Dressed Man in 1983 left a strong impression on me. They put out an accompanying video that has been coming back to me in recent days. In the video, a parking valet gets transformed into a sought-after star with the help of the band and a trio of women.

By the end of the video, he ends up “getting the girl” and the band gives him the keys to the Eliminator car. The video comes back to me because I’ve been thinking about what it means to be a sharp dressed man? Like the video, I used to think it was a slick suit and a power tie.

I’m not sure anymore.

Crazily enough, I think to be called a sharp dressed man now means comfort over pizzazz.

—I was in the hospital with my wife earlier this year. I couldn’t help but notice how many health care professionals wore Crocs. For the uninitiated, Crocs are the brand of shoe that is known for being lightweight and comfortable. I know Crocs get a bad rap, but if I saw one pair of them, I saw 300 of them. They were everywhere in the hospital, from the waiting room to the medical offices to the cafeteria. Now they look horrible to me. If I worked in a hospital, I suspect that I would lean more toward a good pair of running shoes. However, it did open my eyes. If nothing else, I would love how easy they go on and off.

I may be willing to kick Crocs to the curb. But, a loose-fitting pair of scrubs tops my sharp dressed man list. They looked as comfortable as can be. Chemistry and Science were never my thing in high school and college. With a good pair scrubs, though, I might be able to save a life or two. Hell, I might be able to save the world. Who’s with me?

—Sweat pants. Need I say more.

—A nice button down dress shirt and beat-up khaki shorts. These are my perfect Zoom, Skype, MicroSoft Teams, Google Meetings, GoToMeeting, Slack, Webex Meetings go-to clothes. I feel like I’m a man of mystery when I wear this outfit. It’s all professional on top, casual on the bottom. What you can’t see doesn’t need your attention!

—I track my wardrobe now by the pandemic. Before the pandemic, I had a small collection of t-shirts. Since the pandemic, my number of t-shirts has exploded. I have my dressy ones, my football Saturday ones, my sweaty-dad-doing-dad-things-like-mowing-the-yards ones, and even my going to bed ones. I’ve come to the conclusion that you can never have too many of the perfect fitting t-shirts. The more, the merrier.

—A perfect pair of jeans that always fit right.

Where on my list is good suit? A black tie outfit? Nope. I wore suits — blue ones, black ones and every other color in between — for 25 years. You can’t make me wear them anymore! Heck, I had to tie a Windsor Knot recently and I completely forgot how to do it. I had to Google it, because it had been so long.

I think my days of being a sharp dressed man are over!

  1. Crocs are super popular among middle school and high school kids, the elegant way to dress is to wear them with pajama pants. Jeans are for old people like teachers or those who use Facebook 😉

  2. I’m cracking up over here! I love that you have your “dressy” t-shirts, Brian. Maybe you and Paul are genetically related somehow? LOL! And this? “Sweatpants. Need I say more.” Too funny! And true! 😜

  3. I absolutely agree that comfort is key in dressing today! Your reflections on a “sharp dressed man” really resonate with me. Like you, I’ve found myself prioritizing comfort over style, especially after the pandemic. There’s something liberating about a good pair of t-shirts and comfy pants.

I’ve also noticed how many people are embracing relaxed outfits in professional settings. It seems like the days of squeezing into a stiff suit are behind us. Let’s champion comfort in our wardrobes!

Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts on this!

  4. Sorry. Nope.

Crocs have their place in kitchens and hospitals because, let’s face it, ugly as they are, they are kind to feet that must stand all bloody day.

I lament the fact that hardly anyone makes an effort anymore. I ent to a concert and the number of “bums” dressed in old ratty-ass jeans and awful t-shirts were way too many.

Nice new jeans, button-shirt and blazer go a long way and will way more catch my eye than some bum in sweatpants (!) and a t-shirt any day.

      1. All jokes aside, I do get it. I’m not exactly what you would call a well-dressed woman.
For years I was, then I started working in places where no one did and I fell into their dress code. Now I kinda wanna up it a notch. 😉

  5. Brian, you are a hoot! 🥼👔👖 I am not a fan of those crocs either. They remind me of something a clown would wear, as comfortable and easy to put on as they may be. I suppose I have always been into fashion and even my casual outfits are dressy casual to this day. I am not a scrubs or pajama wearing person in public especially. I don’t understand how I go out and see so many people wearing pajamas in the stores and seem to think nothing of it. What’s next? 🤷🏻‍♀️

  6. The Crocs must be very comfortable or have a lot of support. They were all the rage for swimmers when my kids were on a year round swim team. But somehow my kids didn’t want them. Uggs were also popular and they opted for Uggs. It’s such a look to wear swimsuits with Ugg boots. It’s a swimmer thing. Or was…

  7. Things seem to have shifted towards a more casual attire in many work places. And I do appreciate the ability to dress down and be comfortable and am thankful I don’t have to shirt and tie it to work.

I will admit I’m a crocs person! 😆 I even started wearing crocs to work now. 😂 They are so so comfy and unless there’s thick snow out, I wear them in winter too with thick socks. 😆

  8. Ah, you are still a sharp-dressed man – you just now know how to balance it with comfort. I’m with you, my ideas have changed over all the years. Now “sharp” is “smart!” Sweats, t-shirts, jeans – yes, yes, yes!

  9. Hahaha I have to say i’d go with crocks and a best dressed man these days wear those and sweats. Let me tell you that was the biggest issue for my husband going to the wedding. I didn’t let him wear the crocks tho,.. lol., 💕 My idea of dressing up is putting new sweats on the next day.💕

    1. We’re going away this weekend and I started to panic because it hit me that I can’t wear loose sweatpants. I have to actually dress up like a real person. My fear: if I have to dress up, the family and friends we’re spending time with, probably expect me to have real conversations too. Ugh!!! Ha ha. Oh, what will I do? 🤣🤣🤣

  10. I still have that album on vinyl. Such a classic! I’ve always been more of a “Legs” man, so to speak. And I practically live in sweats this time of year, so no need to say more about that!
