Go west, young man!

We had a chance to spend a few days with our son last week at Arches National Park in Utah and the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. I could write a lengthy, flowery post on the trip, but my words would never explain it better than the pictures themselves.

Beautiful, beautiful country.

Yes, go west, young man.

Arches National Park:

“Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.” —Unknown

“We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.” —John Hope Franklin

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” —St. Augustine

“With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding.” —Sandra Lake

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” —Ibn Battuta

“The gladdest moment in human life, methinks, is a departure into unknown lands.” —Sir Richard Burton

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” —Lao Tzu

“Live your life by a compass, not a clock.” —Erica Jong

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” —Anthony Bourdain

“Not all those who wander are lost.” —J.R.R. Tolkien

  1. Beautiful pics, Brian. There’s no doubt that the natl parks in the U.S. west/southwest are indescribably spectacular. Everyone should have the opportunity to visit them, and there’s a long list.

  4. BEAutiful pictures. I’ve been to the Grand canyon a couple times. I stay a couple days in the park. Love it. A friend of mine used to say the sky is blue… because of Pen State.

  6. These photos are amazing — the scenery looks beautiful! And accompanied with thoughtful quotes. The quotes from Ibn Battuta and Anthony Bourdain are new to me, and they’re great food for thought.

      1. My parents spent a good deal of time tooling around the country in an RV. My mom wrote about in Heading South: Tales from the RV Trail. It was so interesting how diverse our country is. I want to do the same some day.
