The perfect gift

I opened the box, pulled back the tissue paper, and stood there, staring down at the gift. I couldn’t speak. My mouth moved, but nothing came out. My fiancé, who I would marry later that year, looked back at me. She was so excited to give me the Valentine’s Day present that she giggled with excitement.

We had been out a few weeks earlier and I had mentioned in passing that I liked a brown leather bomber jacket that I saw in a store window. We were young and didn’t have a ton of money. We were trying to save money for our wedding. Everything that we saved outside of regular bills went toward the wedding and starting our life together.

My comment about the jacket was a throw-away comment. I had just mentioned that the rich kid in my dorm in college had a leather jacket just like it and I had always liked the look and feel. I added that one day, when I was more established, when money wasn’t quite an issue, I hoped to get a real leather one for myself. I never thought anything would come of my comment.

And now a brown leather jacket just like I had described was in my hands. It felt like a dream.

A big gift

The jacket has long ranked high on my list of favorite gifts. I think in large part because it caught me off guard. I didn’t have any ideas that it was coming. I wore the jacket for the next twenty years well past normal wear and tear. I hated to give it up — the jacket meant so much to me — but time finally caught up to it and me.

I’ve been thinking recently about some of the best presents that I’ve ever given and received in my life because July 4 marks the 140th anniversary of France gifting the Statue of Liberty to the United States.

France and a slew of benefactors presented the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. Ambassador as a symbol of freedom and democracy on July 4, 1884 in Paris, France to commemorate the alliance between the two countries during the American Revolution. French intellectual and anti-slavery activist Édouard de Laboulaye hoped the statue would inspire the French people to call for democracy in the face of a repressive monarchy.

The statue was built in France between 1875 and 1884 by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the help of engineer Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. The statue was disassembled and shipped via the French Navy ship, Isère to the U.S, arriving in New York in June 1885. The pedestal for the Statue was not yet complete, so it remained in pieces on Bedloe’s Island until it was reassembled and officially unveiled in October 1886.

Now that’s a gift!

Personal gifts

I was touched by the leather jacket. I learned that the best gifts catch the other person by surprise, have a personal and meaningful connection, and shows that you listen, know, and care deeply for the other person.

When I asked my wife about the best gifts I’ve ever given her in our thirty years together, I was amazed how quickly she recited the list. I would’ve had to hem and haw and think for a few minutes. My wife, though, didn’t need to think twice about the question and included both big and small things.

She pointed first to our three children, all grown now; my surprise wedding proposal; a trip out to California to see our son that we took a few years ago; and a small gold apple that I gave her when we were first dating. The apple was a small thing, but she’s a teacher and has always loved apples. The thing that made it special is that I showed her that I got what made her tick.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given or received? What it made it so?

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

—From the poem inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, New Colussus by Emma Lazarus

  1. Your wife’s response to your question is beautiful. And so it the memory of the leather jacket. What a gift to get. Shows she was listening and paying attention.

And I did not know the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France! How interesting.

  2. Those are the best gifts ever – when we don’t expect them.

My husband gave me a painting of sunflowers against a wooden fence. We had gone to his friend’s vernissage (art display) and, of course, since I am nuts for sunflowers, I kept coming back to this one. It was expensive and I didn’t even say a word about how much I would love it. Or did I? No, I don’t think so. Anyway, it is hanging on my wall since. There have been others, he was a most generous man and you have other comments to read 😉

  3. I would never be able to tell the best gift received in the worldly sense. Emotionally, I’d say love, trust and an open heart are the best gifts I’ve received.

  4. I’m big on finding just the right gift for people I care about, and it has nothing to with the dollar value. I remember details and that helps. I love to surprise them. I also really love when someone does that for me. one of my favs is a table that I still have, and am writing on as I type this answer. my 3 daughters, when youngish, got together and bought me a simple table, one piece of wood, weathered, used and clearly much loved, small, perfect size for me and our small space as a single mother/children. it cost 7$ and they all pitched in. it has had my heart forever.

    1. Yes, there’s some different dates. The date France gave the gift, the date it made to the US, and the date that it was finally re-constructed. Yes, yes, I agree Natalie, love that poem. I’ve never actually gone to Ellis Island but feel like people need to study that part of history more to understand those words better!!!!

  5. Goosebumps, especially the leather jacket! (Don’t we need a photo of you wearing it?)

The best gift I ever received was last year when I gave a book talk in Guthrie County, (west central) Iowa, where many of Grandma Leora’s stories took place. An author friend from eastern Iowa, whom I’d never met, had just finished one of the Leora books and sent such a heart-felt note about it. I mentioned that I’d be giving a book talk the next afternoon. After driving halfway across the state, he showed up! Such a delightful surprise, even for the audience. Best gift ever!

    1. Oh, I need to find one. I gotta dig some photo albums out of storage. This is the second piece lately where I’ve written something that I would love to have an old pix. Ha ha. Yes, lots of times, the best gifts aren’t actually things, but actions like you mentioned. So special and mean so much!!

  6. I love that your gift of the apple ranks high on your wife’s list of favorite gifts. It does show that you “got” her. Those are the best gifts in my mind!

    1. I made one mistake though with the apple. It’s actually kind of funny now. When I gave it to my wife we were dating. I went to great lengths to wrap it in a small box and make it look nice. I thought I was being really thoughtful but I almost got myself into trouble. I’m pretty sure when she first saw it, she thought it was a ring! The box was about the same size as a ring box. Yikes. Fortunately for me, the engagement ring came a month of two later. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤣🤣😊😊😊

  7. Love how you tied this all together with meaningful gifts. I wonder if now that we’re established countries – do we give each other gifts anymore? Or just weapons?

The list of gifts between you are your wife is so good. Now that’s the way to stay married for 30 years – appreciate what the other has to give!! ❤ ❤ ❤

  8. That woman really loved her some Brian! Leather? But she did give you the greatest gifts of them all…your three youngins’. Love this composition my friend! 🥰💖🥂 As we approach the 4th of July, that inscription on the Statue of Liberty is spot on! 🗽🗽🗽

  9. Gifting is a beautiful thing to do, and it makes the ‘gifter’ and the ‘giftee’ feel like a million dollars, especially when it is unexpected. When I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Dollar General gifted $50,000 to Read Aloud West Virginia. I was shocked, and incredibly grateful.

  10. You gave her a gold apple? How sweet are you. I love giving a gift that delights and surprises someone I love. That is the best. I also love that she mentioned the children first. So adorable. Hugs, C

    1. One of the best gifts I gave my wife a couple years after we married was a pacifier. Yes, kind of strange I know. We both wanted kids, but I was stubborn and couldn’t get past the $$$. We weren’t fighting, but it was getting to be a sore subject. Finally, I came to my senses. Of course, she was the smarter one. Ha, ha.

  11. I’ve received so many great gifts but one gift remains a favourite. I have a passion for nature and birds in particular. I also love tiny house campers. My youngest son, now deceased, found a birdhouse that is shaped like a little tiny house camper! It couldn’t have been more perfect. I will never forget how excited he was to give it to me. I love it.
