“Darkness falls across the land . . .
The midnight hour is close at hand . . . “
As the opening lines to Michael Jackson’s song Thriller points out, it’s that time of the year again when ghost, ghouls, and goblins come out in the middle of the day to scare the bejesus out of scaredy cats like me. Halloween is fun, but I’m glad it lasts just once a year.
When the kids were young, at least I could count on them bringing home some candy and for the “Daddy Tax” to take hold. You know what I mean, Dad looking over the candy to make sure nothing was too suspicious.
“Yes, two for you, one for dad, two for you, another one for the tax man, and yea that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup looks suspicious too, we better put that in the dad pile.” The kids eventually got wind of my tricks and I had to stop. Now that was a really scary moment.
But, at least I never had it as bad as Charlie Brown in the It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, I never got a rock instead of a piece of candy.
Yes, Halloween is almost here. Happy Halloween.

I loved the last one. It reminded me of something similar, when we were told not to get in cars with strangers, but taxi drivers and Uber drivers are all strangers whose cars we willingly get into.

One year our youngest dressed up as a box turtle. She put a cardboard box, which she had decorated, over her head – cut out openings for her arms – and we all prayed it wouldn’t rain.

Love that costume! My best costume was probably as a pirate which my mom had helped me and let me use an old wig. No one could figure out it was me!!!

My wife mentioned that too. I told her that I was more respectful as a kid than her. Yea, she wasn’t buying that either.

When we bought our last house in 1992, we moved from a very busy trick-or-treat area where we’d run out of candy. The first year in that neighborhood which was new to us, my husband set up a chair in the entryway and sat with a big bowl of candy. Nobody showed up. Then when we took our kids trick or treating in our neighborhood a few years later, we caught everyone by surprise. They were the only kids and people would search their cupboards for things like granola bars.

Oh wow, that’s crazy. Our neighborhood has definitely changed over the year, tons of kids, then a few, and now seems to be back to lots of trick or treaters. Guess it goes with the flow.

Our new neighborhood has very few kids. I think they’re middle school and high school age and too old to trick or treat.

We gather the neighbors at Halloween and enjoy a good old fashioned driveway party. Everyone brings a folding chair, adult beverages, and snacks. We pass out candy to the kids and delight in their costumes (my grandkids included) and then we sit together until the wee hours of the night, when all the trick-or-treaters have gone home, and enjoy each other’s company. It’s tradition. Some of us dress up but it’s mostly about spending time with the neighbors. Hugs, C

We used to do that with a few neighbors. It was a lot of fun. We need to get back to it. Great time with friends.

Oh my goodness, I’ve heard of lots of last minute things that people have handed out . . . but this is the first that I’ve heard of protein bars. Ha, ha.
