Making our getaway!

When my wife and I saw our chance this week, we took it. We gave our best impression of Bonnie and Clyde being chased by the cops and made a run for it — me in the driver’s seat, speeding down a hilly, country road, her, my cool, calm, and collected right hand, giving me directions and telling me to speed it up on the straight-aways.

As soon as I had put a few work tasks to bed early this week, we raced out the door, heading to a nearby woods and park, to take in the setting sun.

Let me explain. Mother Nature has been playing tricks on us lately, and not the Halloween kind where there’s a nice treat at the next house. No, it has rained every weekend in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic for the past two months. During this stretch, the weekdays have been generally fine, and the weekends have been at best, cloudy and overcast, at worst, a sloppy mess.

When the weather finally took a turn for the better, we decided we had reached our limit and when we saw our chance to escape it, even for a short while, we took it.

Mother Nature didn’t have to ask us twice, we were out the door.

After getting a slow start, trees according to Pennsylvania parks officials, are nearing their peak foliage colors across much of the state. There’s something about putting your phone away, except to take photos, and walking in the woods.

Once we reached our destination, we slowed down and took a walk. The leaves seemed to be a mixed bag. Some still had a good bit of green, some looked primed to take center stage in all their glory, and still others looked like they were on the downside.

The color didn’t really matter. It was just what the doctor ordered.

I fight getting out in the outdoors sometimes. I blame work or other obligations. I say I don’t have time or that it won’t make much of a difference, but I find that every time I walk through the woods, I’m reminded of where I grew up, others who came before me, and still others who will come after me.

I’m reminded of God’s enormous power and my limited power.

I’m remind too that many times, I just need to get out and spend some time with my wife out in one Mother’s Nature’s great wonders.

I didn’t come away with any amazing takeaways in this latest adventure. I didn’t magically get wiser or smarter. My work problems didn’t disappear.

I just felt calmer.

We weren’t at the park all that long, maybe 25 minutes or so, but I came away feeling like I had spent the day doing something just for myself. I felt relaxed.

People spend hundreds and thousands of dollars at spas and weekend resorts to get that feeling. I got it with a 25-minute walk through the woods.

Fall means many things to many different people. In many ways, fall means the end of summer, the changing of the leaves, and represents a time of maturity. For me, though, fall means a rebirth. I come alive seeing the different colors. I come alive seeing the deer in the woods.

I come alive knowing that “for everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest.”

Yes, Halloween is here and Thanksgiving will not be far behind. The first frost and the inevitable first dusting of snow will surely be coming as well. I have much to be grateful and I’m excited about all that fall will bring.

Yes, fall bring me your coat of many colors. I can’t wait to see it all. Oh, yes, thank you!

The weather prognosticators are actually calling for nice weather this weekend. I’m not really sure what to expect — it would be nice to make another Bonnie and Clyde getaway to the park — but I don’t care. I got a good dose of Vitamin D and Fall Foliage that will carry me over for a long, long time.

Thank you Mother Nature!

  1. I can drive through the same patch of trees and never really pay attention. Until one day I drive through them and see mother nature has painted them in glorious color. It completely stops me and grabs my focus at the colorful glory, and I know that I am living fully in the moment with nothing in my mind but fascination for the artwork.

  2. Beautiful Brian! Such fun to see all of you enjoying the outdoors…even Nittany! My favorite lines of this entire post, and one I agree with deeply:

“I didn’t come away with any amazing takeaways in this latest adventure. I didn’t magically get wiser or smarter. My work problems didn’t disappear.”

    “I just felt calmer.”

“People spend hundreds and thousands of dollars at spas and weekend resorts to get that feeling. I got it with a 25-minute walk through the woods.”

You pointed out exactly why I walk everyday 🙂

  3. Bonnie & Clyde are a major feature of the small town museum in Dexter, Iowa. They and their gang (the Barrow Gang) camped out in Dexfield Park one week in July 1933, after two of them were wounded in a shootout with police in Missouri. People finally figured out who they were and there was a shootout with a posse in the park. B&C and their driver got away (only to return the next spring to rob the bank of nearby Stuart). Clyde’s brother and his wife were patched up by the very new Dexter doctors, who–decades later–delivered hundreds of us who were born in Dexter! How’s that for a rabbit trail!

Love your autumn photos. Like L.M. Montgomery, I too am thankful I live where there are Octobers!

    1. That’s an interesting story Joy. I have to admit that as I was setting up the “getaway” theme and writing my post, it did dawn on me that Bonnie and Clyde might not be the best of comparisons. Especially how their story ended up. Ha ha. And yes, autumn is my favorite time of the year!

  4. There is nothing like getting a nature fix. My husband and I have been doing this on a regular basis since he decided to forego any treatment for his Cancer. It has been wonderful for both of us. God is so good.

  5. It’s hard when the weather ignores the days you actually have free to get out. We went camping for two nights and I felt like all I did was watch the fire and wait for water to boil, but being in the woods, breathing fresh air completely restored me. Nature’s healing power is endless.

    1. So well said Sadje. I try not to look at life as a race but you naturally fall into traps. It’s good to step outside of it and say for this short time, I’m just going to be in nature’s presence, be with my wife, and take it all in. Does me good. 🍁🍁😊😊

      1. Only worry we had was being pulled over by Mexican police when we crossed the border for doing nothing. They took my husband’s driver’s license and told us for $160 we could get it back and be in our way! That may make it into a blog post…

      2. I haven’t had a chance to read any posts today yet. Sounds like I’ll have some interesting reading. And, I have to admit, I think I would’ve been nervous about that. Ha ha, glad it worked out!!!! And glad too, you’re laughing!

      3. I haven’t written about it yet. I happened after I wrote today’s post. I can laugh now, because nothing worse happened. I can only imagine how people feel living in a tiny border town, dirt poor with all the Americans cruising through to get to a beautiful beach resort. I guess it’s the cost of entry.

      4. My husband tried that. He said he wanted the ticket. They told him he had to go to the courthouse to pay it, and only then would he get his driver’s license back. Hubby asked where the courthouse was located and they said it was closed for two hours, but if we paid them directly, we could be on our way. I wonder if the courthouse was closed at 3 p.m.? If the people in the courthouse would be worse? Or better?

    1. Yes, it was fun to hit pause for a moment and make a run for it. I’m thinking Clyde needs to make another run for it soon if the sun stays out on this nice Friday afternoon!!! Ha ha, hope you’re able to get away too. Gotta focus sometimes on self care and what we need! Ha ha 🍁🍁🍁🍁

      1. Well, let’s face it, we see that the trees are different but when we look at the pics, they do seem awfully similar!
I hope so, too! I have until Sunday to do my “Walktober” and the pics I took on October 14 are not up to my standards 😉
Have a great weekend as well!

      1. Oh, yes, I think of those X-C memories a lot this time of year. If you look closely in one of the pics you can see a trail runner running up the mountain. When I ran my first marathon, I ran in the same park, thought it helped push everything out!

  12. Such a beautiful region and pretty photos of it. When I went to Ashland a couple of weekends ago it rained and I thought about swinging back through the coast to escape rain… that’s when I saw how much of it the northern coast was getting!
