A new spin on an old idea

At its Wonderlust event on Tuesday, Apple took the wraps off its newest products, introducing the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus and a slew of other devices, including the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Apple’s annual fall iPhone event has become a cultural touch point, using the event to announce notable updates and changes expected in the fall. Before his death, Steve Jobs made these types of events a staple of the company.

As I read up on the latest change, it got me thinking. What if we had a coming out party each fall like Apple’s big introduction? Or even like a New York, London or Milan Fashion Week. I’m no fashion expert, but from what I read, they’re out of this world events.

Here’s what I mean:

What if we had a coming out party each September where we’d talk about changes we’re making in our lives. Stephanie kicks off the event in a 1,000-seat theater like the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, to announce the new job she just accepted. Susan and Jim walk the runway catwalk and talk about their new exercise program and nutrition plan and how they’ve each lost fifteen pounds. Tim finishes up the event spelling out the changes he made in his nightly routine, making sure to spend more time playing and hanging out with his kids and reading to them each evening for half an hour.

What if we took the same approach? What if we had people cheering us on from the sidelines? What if we had a crazy light show and music blaring in the background in support of our efforts?

Would we get the encouragement we need to fight through the challenging times? Would the event breed more success? Would we get over our fears? Or would we still feel like an imposter?

I don’t know. Sometimes I like to tackle challenges away from other’s prying eyes. I’m not sure if it I would see bigger improvements or not, but I can say that everyone getting cheered on it wouldn’t be a bad thing!

Sometimes we all need a slap on the back even if it’s just a small change.

  1. I “should” throw a book launch party this fall for What Leora Never Knew: A Granddaughter’s Quest for Answers, but living with fibromyalgia doesn’t get any easier when you’re older! The first three books didn’t get parties either and they’re doing just fine (according to KDP analytics). I’m thankful for Grandma Leora’s social media fans!

    1. Oh, I’m sorry about the fibromyalgia Joy. You’re right though. Launches take many different formats. I just think we should be encouraging each other more. Good luck on the next book. Can’t wait to read more. Sounds like it’s going to do great just like your others! Congratulations

  2. Sounds good to me. My favorite teacher in spin class does this visualization thing – asking us to imagine that all our long-lost loved ones – especially pets – are cheering for us on the sidelines as we approach the finish line of a class. Not gonna lie. That imagery gets me through sometimes! Make it so, Brian. I like your idea! 🥰😎🥰

    1. Oh, that’s such an amazing way to finish a spin class. When I was running much more consistently, I used to imagine that I was finishing up with a high school running friend who has since passed away. He was a great runner. I imagined that we were running stride for stride and he was encouraging me. It felt very lifelike, It became a surreal experience. Thanks for the reminder. And yes, thx for getting my theme about encouraging others, we all need some encouragement nowadays!!!

  3. Having a good word for someone is always good. A slap on the back is even better. Inspiring and encouraging others should be a way of life for all of us. Thanks for your words.

  4. Brian, I love this idea. I love the Apple announcements. Kevin Fiege from Marvel Studios similarly has made their movie announcements a must-see event. But something for individual everyday people that celebrates our personal successes could be so powerful and rewarding too.
