When I was a young child, I was scared of three monsters: the monsters that hid underneath my bed, the boogie monster in my closet, and Jaws. Now I eventually grew out of the boogie monster. I figured out he was just figment of my imagination. I could probably be convinced that the monster underneath my bed isn’t real too, but I’ll never give in on Jaws. He’s real and he’s trying to get me.
When I was seven, Jaws hit the movie theaters. My mother wouldn’t let me see it, but that didn’t mean I didn’t hear about it from my brothers and friends on my bus and, yes, it scared the bejesus out of me. Get in the water? You gotta be kidding me. I didn’t even want to get a stinking bath. If Jaws was as powerful as I thought he was, I figured he’d come up with a way to get me there too. (It didn’t matter that we lived more than 240 miles inland from the nearest ocean.)
Of course, thanks to Jaws, sharks have hit the big time. There’s so much interest in sharks, Discovery Channel has held its annual Shark Week every year since 1988, with the next one starting this coming week on Tuesday, July 11.
Sharks may be portrayed as big bad monsters, but they’re actually just as scared of humans. Encounters with sharks are extremely rare. On average, there are about 100 documented shark attacks around the globe each year.
Despite my fear, I long came to love the ocean. In fact, we came to a mutual agreement, I give the ocean depths a wide berth and Jaws promises to not come to close to coastline or out of the sky, Sharknado style, and take a bite out of me.
I’m safe so far.

“For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it’s always ourselves we find in the sea.”

Great post. Glad you have grown out of the boogie monster and you are right that sharks very rarely pose a threat to humans.

There’s still the monster beneath my bed but I’ll write about him another day. Ha, ha! Sharks are really beautiful creatures.

Jaws was very traumatizing. Even when I swim in a fresh lake, I worry about sharks cuz of that movie. 😆 But the ocean is truly wonderful and puts into perspective we’re part of something bigger indeed.

We’re just one small part of it. Gives perspective! 🐟🐟🐟😎😎🎉😎😎

I totally hear you about Jaws. And any post that somehow mentions Sharknado?? A total winner in my book!

You caught me Wynne. My whole reason for writing about sharks was to find a way to include Sharknado in one of my posts!! Ha ha! I can die happy now. My life is complete. 😜😜😜🦈🦈🌊🌊😎😎😎😎

You two crack me up! Fun Fact? My friend Jill was an extra (beach girl) in Jaws…and she found a way into the remake, too. Her claim to fame…forever… being “in the movies”. And guess what? Jaws spoofs were her favorite sketch comedy routines (thank you vintage SNL) and her fave Halloween costume. LOL! 😎😂😎

Oh that would be my go-to comment in every ice breaker or corporate networking event for the rest of my life. Yup, I’m swimmer #5 in Jaws. My friend Sherry was shark food but I survived. If you look for me real close in the first 20 minutes, you can see me swimming. I’m the one in red bikini. Yup! And yes, love the SNL take! 🤭🤭🤣🤭🤭🤭🤭

Brian, when Jaws came out, the movie made me very fearful of the water! I was scared! Maybe this is why I always feard the dropoff areas of the lake I grew up on in Michigan?

Exactly!!!! You just never knew! At least that’s what I thought as a kid. Ha ha

Brian, no doubt watching that movie gave me the heebie jeebies too, and I was in the 11th grade, and raised on the southeastern coast. The robotics were way too realistic for me! Yowser! While I love the ocean, I am super careful about treading in the water because I still can’t shake that movie’s images to this day! UGH! 😝🦈😲

I’m right there with you Kym, love looking at the water, very careful in it. Darn Jaws. 😂😂😂

Love the quotes! And funny enough, I just rewatched JAWS. There are so many good lines in that movie. But I do remember as a kid checking the water in our above-ground pool before going in, even though I knew logically that sharks can survive in chlorinated water. In the battle of imagination versus logic, imagination seems to win out pretty often, at least for me.

Oh my goodness, my imagination gets me every time. Imagination is definitely more powerful than logic!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

I remember when Jaws came out, I was young, at the Colorado river and didn’t want to go in the water at night. Creepy. 🙂 But we’ve watched the movies a million times, the first being the best. A classic. I have deep respect for the ocean and all creatures living within its depths, and I’m actually fascinated with sharks. I’ll never surf though. Great post, Brian.

A good way of phrasing it “respect,” but still wary. Ha, ha.
