A whale of a time

A friend of mine from Boston talks about getting away for the weekend and going to the Cape, as in Cape Cod. He says there’s nothing else like it. My friends in New Jersey (as well as the Philadelphia and Delaware area) talk about “heading down the shore.”  (The “to” and “Jersey” left out for simplicity sake.)

I know others who like to make the trip south on 95 to the Outer Banks. They to have their own slang and short form, referring to the vacation haven simply by its initials OBX. I’m not as familiar with the West Coast references, but I’m sure they exist too.

We all have our special places to get away. I love mountain streams and rivers and I love a good country lake, but nothing else can match leaning back into your chair, putting your feet in the sand, closing your eyes, and listening to the waves crash to the shoreline.

Nothing else says summer like skipping out from work and home obligations and making the trip to the beach. Yes, now that sounds perfect, here’s to summer!

  1. Great post! I love the beaches along the east coast. I’ve been as far as Vermont and Maine all the way to Florida. Outer Banks is great; and of course all the beaches at Jersey Shore. And you’re right, while other bodies of water are nice, nothing beats the beach.

  2. Love this post, Brian!! I always thought of myself as a mountain person, not a beach person. But in recent years, I’ve realized that it’s wonderful to be both!!

  3. We got married in Laguna Beach 38 years ago in July! Every summer since, we’ve spent time at the beach. “Woods” is our slang for our favorite beach in Laguna. Lately, we visit the Santa Barbara area and our favorite beach is the one where Kevin Costner is trying to get his newly-divorced wife out of his $145 million home! Yes, it’s a gorgeous beach and his house is tucked away at the end on a cliff where people can’t walk by.

      1. We walk that beach every day on vacation and our friends pointed out Costner’s house. I heard on the radio on my way to the store today that the wife won’t move out! I don’t blame her either! 🤣

  4. I love the beach! I am blessed to live on an island where you are never more than about 10 miles from water in any direction. I grew up just a short walk from my family’s private beach and practically lived there all summer playing with my sisters, brother and loads of cousins. I have so many happy memories at the beach. Even if I didn’t I’m sure I would still love the smell of the salt air and the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Thanks

  5. We say we’re going to the ocean beaches because there are too many here to name–lakes, sandy areas along rivers and of course the beautiful Puget Sound itself.

  6. The video of the beach is very idyllic, Brian! I too love a good mountain view and lake and river and also the comfort of the beach. Summers are so short and must be treasured and enjoyed. And I do hope to visit Cape Cod one day!
