Mystery of life: Make your choice

A few years ago, I would occasionally run Mystery of Life questions about everyday things that made me pause and think about life’s ups and downs. It’s been a while, but feels like no time like the present, to bring it back.

My questions today aren’t really Mystery of Life questions, but they still represent choices on things that matter to us. Let me know what you think.

So here goes.

Dreamer Questions:

—When you dream in the middle of the night, what age are you? Are you the age you are now or a younger version of you?

—When you think back to happy times, what age comes to mind? I used to think that I was happiest when I first left home in my 20s. I don’t think that’s true anymore. I tend to think I’m happier now. What about you?

—Which are you more likely to have: long, vivid dreams or long, vivid nightmares?

Happiness Questions:

—When are you the most content: Before you leave for a trip or when you come home? I used to think right before I left, there’s so much anticipation, but why not when you come home and have the memories to draw upon?

—What’s better, indulging on a creamy Chocolate Milkshake or Raspberry Ice Cream Cone or finishing up a hard, sweat-drenched work-out?

—What gets you out of bed: excitement about what you’re going to accomplish that day or fear of not getting out of bed and achieving what you want to accomplish? What works best for you — positive or negative reinforcement?

—When you wake up, what’s your first choice of the day: Coffee, Tea, or Water?

Love or like Questions:

—Which would you choose: a billion dollars or a stress-free life? The newest Bugoti or a Toyota Highlander with 15,000 miles that will drive hassle free for another 200,000 miles? A penthouse apartment in the center of New York City or a lake house in the middle of Maine or Wisconsin?

—Describe the perfect day? What time do you get up? What do you eat? Who do you see? Why is it perfect?

—Describe your worst day? What happens? How’s it different from your perfect day?

—If you could do anything and know that it would be a success, what would you do? I would spend a third of the the year finishing my book, another third working on a business venture and a final third giving back in some way by working as a college professor, high school teacher or volunteer at a needy nonprofit.

Pick your poison questions:

—Which are you choosing: Hate your boss, love your job or love your boss, hate your job?

—Getting in the ring against the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Heavyweight Champion or the Heavyweight Boxing Champion?

—Hang-gliding, bungee jumping, sky-diving, Hawaiian cliff-diving, scuba diving or free climbing? (Can I pick more than one!)

—Survive for a month on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean or in the Canadian wilderness?

—Beer, Wine or abstain from both?

Thanks for taking today’s Mystery of Life Challenge! Let me know how you would respond!

  1. Definitely happier now! Love coming home. Ice cream after a sweaty workout — when the sweaty workout is walking to the ice cream stand. My bladder gets me out of bed every morning. #motivation

  2. Oh geez Brian—question overload! You had me at what age am I when I dream? Ageless. That’s as far as I got. One question at a time works for this slow thinker! Fabulous questions, though. Maybe I’ll answer another one tomorrow! 🤔😜😃

  3. Brian, I have no idea why but for 2 days now I never know if I will be able to access your blog. I keep getting kicked out or can’t even begin to get in at all so I’m writing this quickly just to say I’m not ignoring you but something is up that I can’t figure out. No issues with any other blog but yours.

    1. Okay Deb, thanks so much for letting me know. Sounds like WordPress gremlins! I haven’t been doing anything different so I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to access my blog. Gets me kind of upset!!!! I’m sorry about that. Not sure why just my blog!!! Thx for letting me know!!!!

  4. Gosh…I think I can only answer two with conviction. I always prefer the ‘coming home’ when it comes to traveling. I like the ‘going’ but the returning – to home/hearth? The best. And positive or negative reinforcement? Wowza. Always, always positive. Negative reinforcement might get me moving but I’ll have an agenda, LOL, for later! 😎

  5. These are GREAT journal prompts! I’m going to tuck some of these away.
The two I can answer right away are: I drink coffee (black) first thing in the morning, and if I had to choose between beer, wine, or abstain, I would choose abstain because wine gives me headaches and I don’t like the taste of beer. 😒

  6. Lots of great questions. On the dreaming part, I’m my age now, but my children are young, sometimes infants or toddlers. My golden retriever, born on my sixth birthday, is with me and I’m amazed at how good she looks for being so old! Lately better than ice cream is a swim workout. I’m back to swimming three times a week that it feels so good to me. As for the MMA fighter, Cub Swanson was learning to swim with me in Palm Springs. He was the friendliest, nicest guy. I didn’t know who he was until our coach told me.

      1. It’s getting easier. But I have to say that when I lived in Palm Springs I had a coach and teammates to push me. I had a neighbor who had been a swimmer at Northwestern text me before every practice to make sure I’d show up! I never swam near him because he was in the fast lane and I was at the other end with the beginners. But he knew how to be a good teammate and make me show up!

      2. Aww, that really makes a difference. It’s ages ago, but the guys I ran with in high school and later when I had started a family were the best. They did that for me … kept me honest. It’s hard going it alone. Maybe we need to creat a page like that on WordPress. “Yo Brian put down the desert! Did you run today? No, get at it!” Something like that. Ha ha 😂😂👿👿

      3. Haha! I like that idea. We can become our own team. I’m doing much better swimming when I decided not to go along, but drag my husband with me. Instead of going while he works, we go when he’s off work.

  7. So many questions …. the one that jumped to mind for me was boss/job. I know the answer … it has to be love my boss. In my current job, which I love, I had a horrible boss who made everyone’s life awful. I think a bad boss is difficult to cope with, especially when they think they’re great, had she not been pushed, we’d have been leaving.

  8. Morning drink: Tea. Because tea fixes everything. Bad day, have some tea. Good day, have a nice cup of tea. Ask any Brit … and while I drink coffee sometimes, it’s always after a good cup of tea …

    1. I just finished my first tea if the day, so I definitely like your answer and top it off with Gladstone’s “If you are cold, tea will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; If you are depressed, it will cheer you; If you are excited, it will calm you.”

  9. Great questions, Brian! My brain is now a flood with wanting to answer them all. Since I am a dreamer I will go with that category… Life is never without challenges, however, I think I am generally happiest at this stage of my life. I am 54. 😁

  10. Beer AND wine! Very cool collection of questions. I think when we dream is the same as when we are awake. As beautiful y summarized by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa “We are our dreams of ourselves, souls by gleams,
And each to each other dreams of others’ dreams.”
