The best way to end a cold, cold day

I have memories of my kids coming to me when they were young and needing daddy to scare away the monsters underneath their beds. I have memories of giving them some dad wisdom about which course to take in college or how to handle a tough boss. I even have funny stories of getting on the ground and playing Barbie or puppets with them.

But, as Father’s Day comes up this weekend, one of my proudest dad moments has nothing to do with monsters or Barbie and everything to do with, well, err, breaking the rules and enjoying some delicious ice cream.

Never say no to ice cream

When my daughter was in elementary school, I had tickets to a college football game at my alma mater. The tickets were in the nose-bleed seats, meaning they were high up in the stands, you couldn’t go much higher, but I was excited to be back on my old stomping grounds. My daughter wasn’t all that interested in football and it was one of those cold bone chilling Autumn days, but she was happy to spend the day with me.

As the game wore on, I could see that she was starting to lose interest. The cold wasn’t letting up either, so I asked if she wanted to leave. Her smile perked up right away. We had a long drive home, but we first decided to walk down downtown to get her a t-shirt and something to remember the day.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream

After she had her shirt, to her surprise, I asked if she wanted to go for ice cream. She looked at me with a surprised look on her face. Ice cream? On a cold day? Yes, I know it’s freezing out I told her, but “what a better way to end a cold day then to get some ice cream.”

Of course, she was on board. Yes, it’s one of my proudest dad moments. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. There’s always room for ice cream!

  1. Now THAT’s the sign of a very good Dad: you saw when your daughter wasn’t into the game anymore and you took her for a cold treat on a cold day that you’ll both long remember 🙂🙂🙂 Lots of parents would have missed the cues, but you ‘got’ that the important thing was just spending the day together. This is a lovely story, Brian 🙂💕🙏

  2. I love Patti’s thoughts about how you didn’t miss the ‘cue’ and an opportunity to make a fun, albeit chilly memory! Ice cream is never a bad idea! 🥰

  3. Yay! A fun, proud dad moment! My dad used to take us for pajama rides which us kids loved. We would be all ready for bed and he would yell ice cream time and we knew that meant we would go for a drive to our nearby ice cream stand. ❤

  4. That’s fantastic, Brian. What a great dad. I’ll bet it’s a memory she treasures too. When parents do the unexpected, that’s the best. (Pretty sure I put that in my parenting book, too.)
