I apologize if I’m a little excited.
My wife and I and our three kids will all be home today under the same roof for the first time in nine months. Our son, a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, came home last weekend; our daughter came home yesterday for a long weekend; and our youngest son will be home from college for the summer.
We’ve been waiting for this weekend for a long time. I know we’re lucky. I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning, I’m full of excitement and anticipation. The five of us won’t be together for long and I have no idea when we’ll be together again, but I’ll take whatever time we can get.
As a parent, you go from spending all your time together with your kids. When they’re little, you’re around them 24/7 and then, they start to leave home and you never know, sometimes they come home, other times, they have their own commitments and are limited when you can see them. I’ll say this much: I love being able to just hang with my kids. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
I know I’m not alone in recognizing the importance of family:

Thanks Joy …. We picked up our youngest son late last night! All three home now. Very cool to see them altogether joking and teasing each other! 😎😎😎😎

Exactly my plan Stockdale! It’s going to be a short visit, but appreciate it all the same.

Like Joy and Ab said — enjoy every morsel and moment with them…what a treat. And I’m with you – nothing’s better than being surrounded by family — all the fun, giggles and goofy stuff. Thanks for sharing with us, Brian. Tell the family your blogging friends think you’re awesome! 🥰😉🥰

A little tired from all the driving, but glad to have them home. A bit of a zoo, but glad to be in the middle of it all. As for the blog, they like to tease me about it. “Ooh, gotta watch what you tell dad, he might write about ya” laugh, laugh, giggle. I think they think my blogging friends are all a figment of my imagination. Ha, ha, oh brother. I have no idea where they get their sarcasm.

I understand this excitement!
I also enjoyed the title of this post…Blues Brothers? It’s one of my favorite movies!

Of course, I had to Google some of the famous lines from the movie: “We’re On A Mission From God” and “We’re 106 miles to Chicago. We’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses…. Hit it” — both come to mind! Looking forward to the weekend.

That’s exciting. Isn’t it nice when you like your kids? Mine are still all at home, but when we went on a family vacation recently, it struck me how nice it is that we all enjoy being together. What a drag it would be otherwise. 😛

Yes, well said. It really is a cool feeling when you’re laughing and a part of the moment, but you step back and take a look at think to yourself, even if I wasn’t related to this people, I would really want to spend some time with them. Good people. Of course, it’s also a bit scary when I realize that I had nothing to do with them being fun and loving people, it’s them. Ha, ha. Here’s to more family vacations!!!!

You absolutely had something to do with them being fun and loving people, Brian! Come on, man. Take some credit!

If I take credit, then I have to take credit for messing them up too!!!! And I know I’ve done that too! 😜😜😜😜

Well, yeah. We are parents. We do that to our kids too. Yet they survived that right of passage! Hurrah! 🙂

I so, so understand your excitement, Brian. Nothing, nobody trumps time with kids. They always first—whenever and wherever you can catch them! I’m not sure that they can even begin to fathom the joy that they bring to us one-generation uppers! Enjoy!!!

Have a wonderful time with your kiddos. I know those moments I look forward to but they don’t happen that often. We have to go visit them in Berkeley for it to happen. Fortunately they live one mile apart. My son works remotely and can visit and brings his girlfriend. My daughter has been at UC Berkeley for less than a year and it’s an in person job.

Love that while you may not live close (in miles) to your kids, they live only a mile apart. There’s something comforting in that as a parent. Could be my small town mindset but I love that!!!! 😎😎😎😎

And you’ve reminded me about those early years when something as simple as learning how to whistle is the highlight of the day! Such a great thing!
