A peaceful Thanksgiving

A few weeks ago I went for a walk and saw this guy. I’m not much of a bird guy, but I believe he’s a Great Blue Heron. They’re found along freshwater and saltwater, including lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, and the ocean coastline. They can sit still for hours in shallow water while they hunt for fish.

I came across him and found myself watching him for twenty minutes. He caught some of the fish that swam in the river. Mainly, he just stood calmly in the water. I was fascinated that he looked so peaceful and calm. He just kept looking and watching.

I tried to get closer, but he didn’t seem too happy to have an interloper.

I made a note to remember him come Thanksgiving morning. Thanksgiving in the US is a day set aside to gather together with friends and family and give thanks for our blessings. May we all have the same kind of peace as this heron on Thanksgiving Day and throughout the year.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving.

When I have seen a heron where I have walked. Which is sometimes. It’s not a regular sighting.

I enjoy watching and I am known to watch for some time. Hoping to be at a distance to watch. But not to make a heron nervous that they contemplate leaving.

I love how graceful they look while very slowly moving in the water. I am yet to witness one in action, catching a fish, in watching over the last few years. I really hoped I would witness that this year, with knowing there are plenty of fish. But no luck.

  2. My aunt and I saw a Great Blue Heron the day we drove up to our river property to spread my mom’s ashes. Great Blue Heron’s were my mom’s favorite bird so it seemed to be a magical omen to us.

  4. We have a heron who visits a nearby golf course lake at times during the year. Stoic, quiet, just takes in the scenery. I have enjoyed watching it living in the moment, and I enjoyed this post as well. Brian, hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving!
