Creating some hope – Part II

New York Times Best Selling Author Stephen King is known for his horror novels that scare the bejesus out of us and give us nightmares. He’s an expert in fear and the unknown. Instead of fear, though, I love his thoughts on another human experience: laughter.

He wrote that “You can’t deny laughter; when it comes, it plops down in your favorite chair and stays as long as it wants.”

Life can be challenging, but laughter helps us see the possibilities and gives us the nudge we need to let our hair down. I’m not sure I would want a life without laughter. If you ask me, it wouldn’t be much of a life.

I’m running this series each Monday, from February 17 to March 17 to help point out the good in life.

  • Reading a journal or something that I wrote years ago and seeing how things have changed — what I thought mattered the world at the time doesn’t seem so important now. Woody Allen put it another way. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.”
  • The late Robin Williams on stage. The audience glued to him, ready to laugh and be amazed. And he starts riffing about life in America or a million other topics. It was one laugh after another after another.

  • A Dad Joke that’s so silly that it’s actually funny. Here goes. “Which days are the strongest? Saturday and Sunday. The rest are weekdays.”
  • I know Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck broke up last year. Nonetheless, I absolutely love the Dunkin DunKings’ commercial they were in with Matt Damon and Tom Brady for Super Bowl 58. Every time I see the darned thing, I laugh. I’m not sure if it’s Damon shaking his head in embarrassment. Or JLo’s “Tom, you can stay” but it causes me to break out into a laugh. (For the record, I wasn’t a big fan of Dunkin’s most recent commercial in this year’s Super Bowl.)

  • I had a friend in college who would follow others around in the grocery store. When he told me this story, I thought it was going to be a desperate confession. I thought he was going to admit that he was shop lifting or stealing from others. Instead, when they weren’t looking, he would put random things in their shopping carts — the stranger the better, baby food for an old couple, condoms, medication for hair loss, a laxative treating constipation, anything outlandish. Then, he would watch to see the customer’s reaction in the checkout line. It was a silly thing, but sometimes you need silly.
  • And finally, who doesn’t love Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia playing Heart and Soul on the floor piano in FAO Schwarz in the 1988 movie Big.

The next post in this series will run on Monday, March 3.

  1. Laughter really does make most things better. Love the shoutout to Robin Williams. I have to say, despite the vulgar humour, a good Joan Rivers routine brings out the chuckles for me. You inspired me to look one up later tonight, Brian!

  2. Perfect post for this morning! Love it!
Your friend cracks me up! I can just imagine the elderly couple looking at each other in confusion and holding up the baby food. 😂 and Oh gosh on the condoms! 😂😂
Yes, I agree, I cannot imagine life without laughter.
    E.E. Cummings says it well!
Will have to go back and find last Monday’s post. 🙂

    1. Joy, I was appalled at first. I thought my friend was telling me some elaborate plan to rob people and then he told me that. I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry. Ha, ha. I’m still convinced he would be an amazing stand up comedian or TV host. Ha, ha. And if you look to the bottom of the post, I included the link to the first post on things that make me smile. Ha, ha.

  3. Oh…your friend was quite the trickster at the grocery store! And I’m with Darlene…Robin Williams was the best. Vulnerable…funny…human…and oh-so kind. Love your series, Brian! 🥰

    1. You know how you meet some people who one part crazy, one part genius, one part everything else in between. That was him. He was so funny. Ha, ha. I hope you like the series. I know I need the smiles and humor. Too much news and not enough happiness in the world.

  4. Great examples of what can make us laugh. I’m not a frequent “laugh out loud” person, but sometimes even the smallest thing, such as a joke on a sitcom episode I’ve seen before, will do it.

    1. Yea, I’m with you Belinda. I rarely laugh out loud at the TV or something I see online. I normally just chuckle to myself. When I do laugh though, it can be loud. A coworker used to tell me she could tell where I was in the building by my laugh. I used to be annoyed by that, but I figure now, that it’s a good thing. Ha, ha.

    1. I was at the library recently and had On Writing in my hands, but put it back down. I’ve read it before, but it’s been awhile. I need to read it again. When I read it last time, I found it motivating. It gave me a ton of different ideas. Need to come back to it. Thanks for the reminder!!!!
