The KISS principle, or “Keep it Simple, Stupid”, is a design principle that encourages simplicity in products, systems, and explanations. The idea is that simple solutions are often more effective and easier to maintain.
I can think of few designers, engineers, artists, and writers who used KISS better than cartoonist Charles Schulz. He was a master at putting pen to paper and drilling complex concepts like friendship, love, kindness down to their core. He made readers feel like he was writing just for them.
Schulz created the first Peanuts cartoon on October 2, 1950, and produced the strip for the next fifty years until his death on Feb 12, 2000. At its height, Peanuts was published each day in 2,600 papers in 75 countries and in 21 languages. In total, Schulz published 17,897 Peanuts strips. The strips, plus merchandise and product endorsements, produced revenues of more than $1 billion per year and earned Schulz each year between $30 and $40 million.
Oh, yes, life at its simplest and it’s best. Here’s three of his works from the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center located in Santa Rosa, California:

What a wonderful article, Brian! I love Peanuts. What a gifted and simple way to view life and bring joy to others. One of my granddaughters loves Snoopy. I sent her a Valentines Snoopy yesterday to add to her collection she is building. Have a great day!

I’ve written in the past that I loved Peanuts and especially Snoopy as a kid. When I saw that it was the 25th anniversary of his death, I knew I had to post something. Amazing that he did the cartoon for fifty years. 🙂

Charles Schulz was unassumingly brilliant. We have four generations of “Peanuts” fans in our family.

A great example of the effectiveness of simplicity. Those comics panels don’t have complex backgrounds. Just some squiggles for grass! The characters get to have all of our attention.

Yup, you’re so right Dave. Less focus on what doesn’t matter. And more focus on what does. Such a genius move.

I love Peanuts. So many great characters. Did you know that the their home in Santa Rosa was lost in a fire in 2017? All of his original art was destroyed and the home was nothing but rubble. So sad.

Oh, that’s a shame. So sad. Can you imagine the things that were lost to the fire. Ugh.

All of his drawings and original cartoon boards are gone. I remember reading about it when it happened.

I love Peanuts, as you and I have discussed in the past, and Schulz is the master of KISS and can pack so much story and insights into such limited space. It’ll be 25 years this year since his passing and the 75th anniversary of Peanuts. It’ll be interesting to see if they do anything to mark this milestone.

He was a genius. Twenty five years since his last original strip and I find that I still am entertained or learn something new. Great stuff.
