Reaching the mountaintop!

A middle school student walks up to the podium. Her fingers are wet with perspiration. She tries to smile, but she can’t. The teacher calmly tells her that if she can spell the word “chiaroscurist,” she will win the district spelling bee. She closes her eyes and repeats the word to herself. She opens her eyes back up and promptly spells it correctly.

When the teacher nods his head in approval, the crowded auditorium breaks out into a loud cheer. Finally, the girl is able to smile. (Of course, as you all know “chiaroscurist” is an artist who uses light and shadow to create an illusion of volume and depth.)

It’s other events too. A recent grad slips a car salesman a small sticky note with her final figure. The salesman hems and haws and says that he’s not sure his manager will go for the price. She holds firm and says she’s ready to walk. The salesman takes the slip of paper back to the main office. The grad wonders if she was too aggressive. She can hear the clock on the wall tick off the seconds. Finally the salesman comes out and says, yes, it’s a steep cut, but he’ll accept the price. The grad jumps up and down and throws her hands in the air, proud of herself.

And then there was the end of last night’s Super Bowl LIX. Two years ago, Quarterback Jalen Hurts had to walk through an ocean of KC red and orange in defeat. He had played a solid game, but still came out on the losing side. Last night, he stood in the middle of the Superdome with green and white confetti coming down all around him. I couldn’t help but think about all the emotions that had to be going through his mind.

You just never know:

“Over the years, I’ve given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement.” –Steve Prefontaine

    1. Yea, I’ve had that happen at times. It’s like you’re walking through a desert. Nothing seems to work. Everyone has their own idea on solutions. I trust you’ll find your way through it. Give yourself time and grace. You’ll come out on the other side!!!! 😎😎😎🙏🏼😎

  1. As Mary Pickford once said, “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”

    1. I originally had another post planner for Today. It was about something different. But then I figured I would want to write about the game. My first draft talked broadly about the Mountaintop. I stayed up until midnight putting in the graph about Jalen Hurts. Ha ha

  2. Those confetti rain moments are the best and you’re absolutely right, life is about a series of highs and lows and they help us appreciate the view when we reach the mountaintops. 💕

  3. Oh Brian, what a game! 🦅🏈🦅 It was over in the first half! I think Mahomes got sacked about 7 times? So proud of Jalen and the team! And the fans went wild as expected! 😱 And yes my friend, the highs and the lows…together…make us stronger! 💪🏼

      1. I know Brian, but as that poem goes, “It’s In the Valley I Grow.” I was so impressed with his poise and I too was shocked by how young he is. So glad he didn’t listen to the naysayers and dream assassins! 🦅🦅🦅 Fly like an eagle to the sea! 🎵

  4. I love this: “Of course, as you all know “chiaroscurist” is an artist who uses light and shadow to create an illusion of volume and depth.” We watched the game last night with friends. I missed my Covey, but otherwise it was great!

  5. I love this inspirational post, Brian. These quotes resonate the most:

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall” –Attributed to Confucius

“Dream big, stay positive, work hard, and enjoy the journey.” –Urijah Faber

“You must expect great things of yourself before you can do them.” –Michael Jordan.

We were happy with the Super Bowl outcome, but in the beginning, it wasn’t a good game. We don’t wish a score of ‘0’ for any team. At least they scored, even if they lost.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Oh, it didn’t feel like zero points to me. I feel like I’ve seen Mahomes come back from too many games. I thought for sure that was what was going to happen. I didn’t feel at ease until well into the fourth quarter. I guess I’ve seen too many games go the wrong way. Ha, ha. And yes, I love those quotes too. Remind me to pick myself up and keep at it.
