A deep panic, mixed with anger at myself, set in my gut.
Several years ago we were together with friends at the beach for one last fling before fall came and went we were overwhelmed with to dos and busy demands. We make the trip every year and it’s always a great time.
A couple of the guys and I had spent the day watching football at a nearby bar. I was the most relaxed I had been in quite some time. When our wives and significant others returned from shopping and chilling on the beach, we all walked back to our house.
A few hours later, I stood up with a jump. I realized that I had left my windbreaker hanging on the back of my barstool. I never really cared all that much about the jacket, but I had my car keys and cash zipped up in the front pocket. In my mind, I thought about how we were blocking everyone in the driveway of our rental house and how much of a problem it would be to lose the keys.
I was in full-blown panic mode.

I told my friends and raced back down the sidewalk running back to the bar. Think Usain Bolt running down the track. Arms pumping, legs purring like a motor, I was on fire. I’m pretty sure I broke my mile record running back to the bar. I walked in the bar out of breath and squinted trying to look around. The bar turned into a dance bar at night and I couldn’t see much.
I asked the bartender if he had seen my jacket and he shook his head no. I was about to head back dejected, but in an out-of-the way corner, I saw the barstool that I had been sitting in and, sure enough, my jacket was still there.
I might have sprinted to the bar, but I floated back home. I had what I had come for.
Lose something?
I thought of that old jacket when I saw Uber’s list of lost items last year. The company reported in April that clothing, luggage, headphones, wallets and phones topped the list of most frequently forgotten belongings.
People lose strange things too. The 50 most unique items included hair toupees, live turtles, police-grade handcuffs, a framed Taylor Swift autograph, and two containers with spiders in them. As far as the most forgetful cities, Miami, Los Angelas, and Atlanta topped the list. People tended to lose things the color Red most often, 9pm and 10pm are when most folks report lost items, and January 21st was the most forgetful day of the year.

Why it happens
Numerous studies have looked at why we lose things or are forgetful. Researchers list absent-mindedness as the biggest cause. We’re focused on something other than the object we end up losing — be it the TV remote or a phone or glasses — and the next thing you know it’s lost in space. We never really cemented where we placed it in our minds.
I know that happens to me. I’m multitasking when I should be focused in the here and now.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve ever lost?

I’m stuck on January 21 be a big day for lost stuff. Huh. And the image of you sprinting to the bar made me smile. Panic button moments for sure! I have a recurring dream that I lose my wallet/keys, even though it’s never (knock on wood) happened to me. 😉

I was a rocket. I swear I’ve never been faster. If only I had a stopwatch!!!! Surely my fastest time ever!! Move over Usain Bolt! 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎

A fascinating list, Brian. The live turtle seems intriguing to me. I wanna hear more of that story! 😆 And I hear you on the Usain Bolt response, I would’ve panicked and ran in that same way!

I flew out of the house. My friends still find that to be the funniest part. Me and Usain …. We train together! Ha ha

The BIGGEST thing I ever lost, several times, was my mind! Lol! Thank goodness I was able to find it!

Whoa – great story and I love the trivia about the lost things. Isn’t that fascinating?
I was listening to a podcast with a memory researcher the other day. We don’t record each time we do a routine thing like put down our glasses. Unless is marked by something unusual, we are often relying on habits to find where we put things, not memories. So I wonder if losing things in Ubers are because we’re out of our normal habits and routines?
But please, don’t ride with spiders and turtles…

I’m convinced I’m able to keep my head on because I have a habit of putting my keys, phone, wallet in the same spot. If I move them, the universe is off and who knows what could happen!!!!!😎😎😎 And yes, who carries spiders and turtles. Really?

Pretty scary when that happens. We’ve all done it!

Yes, it’s life, just hate that it happens. I hated too that I was going to be affecting everyone else. It’s one thing to lose something but I knew there would be other downstream impacts. 🤣🤣😎

I was on a trip one time and stopped at a diner. Afterwards, I was about two hours down the road when I realized my purse wasn’t on the seat next to me. I drove back to the diner like mad (wonder I didn’t cause an accident), got out to run into the diner, and then saw that I had put my purse behind the driver’s seat. It had been in the car all along.

Not big things. Although one cost me a small amount to get a new one, was a disabled bus pass which I lost on the bus. And I lost one of my black fingerless gloves, which I reckon that will have dropped onto the floor without realising.
I have mislaid a pen in the house a few times to find later. Wasn’t looking hard enough. Or was I looking too hard? Because it was in the same place. Even though I had already looked there.

I lose pens all the time … and I call myself a pen guy. Like a good pen, but I can’t hold onto them! 🤣🤣🤣😎

Ha! January 21 is my birthday–not sure what that says! It’s also National Squirrel Appreciation Day and National Hug Day. Don’t forget to give a squirrel a hug on January 21st!

You were so fortunate that your jacket was still there. I could feel your panic through your writing. Well done! Yesterday at the SLC airport, my husband set his RED iphone on the counter to get his ID out of his wallet. We were going through security when I told him I’d put his iphone in my purse. Panic time! The airline did have it at their check in counter.

Wow, sounds like your husband was very fortunate. I’ve done things like that … it’s always when it’s out of the ordinary. Ugh!!!! Phone, key, wallet. Always checking to make sure I have all three!

First, hilariously well written and so glad it ended well. Love the list of wacky stuff left and lost – a turtle? As for the wildest thing I forgot, it was more of a case of taking the wrong bag at Paris airport…when I got to my hotel and realized my horrible mistake, I called the name on the bag and apologized profusely…she was cold and distant, but her husband met me at an agreed spot an hour later and he was cool about it…so where was my bag? At the airport, so I had to go back at 7a the next morning and talk my way back into the baggage area – a huge “NON NON NON” but a guy opened a door and I slipped in…and got pulled aside when leaving and the bag was thoroughly searched…I paid for my stupid mistake, that’s for sure!

Oh my goodness. What an adventure … sounds like you definitely paid for your oversight. Ha ha, the last time I flew I tied an ugly looking colorful bandanna on my suitcase. My wife laughed at me, but I was glad I did when I saw three other bags looking similar to mine. 🤣🤣🤣😎😎

That’s exactly it – at the time my bag looked exactly like all the others…I learned my lesson the embarrassing way to be sure!

WHEW Brian! Talk about panic mode. Distractions can do funny things to us and making absentminded mistakes makes us take note and get a grip on our awareness level quickly, eventhough our mistakes can be costly. 😱 Love this my friend. 🤗💖🥰

Man, this is a magnificent question that you asked “WHAT HAVE YOU LOST? To answer it, I have lost stuff in my 25 years of existence but what can I say, life is like that, I accept and move on. The saddest thing I lost was my Samsung 📱 iPhone, I cried😭😭 but Thanks to God, I managed to find another one. I hate losing in life, it does not just ensure you press the panic button but you feel like a failure and hopeless.
Luckily, I trust in God for all that happens.
Have a great evening Brian

Google the Uber info. It’s funny the stuff people leave behind. Plus, what makes Miami, Atlanta and LA the most forgetful cities? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️😎😎
