I’m really confused. If you were able to see me right now, you would see me scratching my head and a look of puzzlement across my face. I look at the numbers and nothing makes sense.
I’ve been looking at my WordPress views and visitor totals for the year and two specific trends make no sense to me. I’m a communications professional and I can’t make heads or tails of the totals:
- My totals have been significantly down over the past three months. Oh, yes, I’m sure the fact that it’s the summer in the U.S. is a big reason. People read less in the summer and are on the go, but I still don’t get how one piece like the post I wrote about some of the road signs and slogans that I’ve come across lately has fared well, but another post just a few days later has lagged behind in hit totals. Is it just the summer doldrums or something else?
- My most popular posts for the year make no sense to me. I review my ten most popular stories this year and, if you had asked me in advance how each of the ten would have done, I would have picked none of them to be my most popular of the year. My posts titled “Writing myself into a corner” where I write about my goal to write a book, “A good question” where I write about how we’re all facing our own burdens and challenges; and “Forgetfulness” my post on how I always forget my mother’s address, even though I write her every week, rank as my top three. I wouldn’t have expected any of those to be in the top twenty, forget about drawing the most interest.
I’ve written about this crazy phenomenon, figuring out what is popular and what’s not popular, in the past and I still don’t get it. For that reason, I’ve long advised others not to get too bent out of shape about hits and views. I’ve always been advised by people smarter than me that as long as you’re using good headlines, key words, and search categories, you’re making the most of search optimization. Hits and views will go up and down, sort of like the weather, but it is still fascinating to watch.
Now I have suspicions on at least one of my popular posts — my post, “You’ve got mail,” the piece where I explained how my wife and I first met. Yes, I knew soon as I wrote that one that it might have some staying power. I knew my wife would share that one with her friends to keep me on my toes. I’m sure she’s contributed heavily to the hit totals. As for the others, I have no clue.
My only thought: The Web is a wild and crazy place.

I’ve kept an eye on the statistics and I know they aren’t 100% accurate. Especially with there being so many different ways to view people’s blogs. Sometimes people read posts without clicking through to them. That counts as a view to me. It doesn’t count to the statistics. I would like them to be more accurate. The posts of mine with the most views make me giggle.

Yes, I can’t explain it. You can spend a lot of time on search terms and headlines. I spend some, but the end of the day, I want blogging to be fun so I try not to focus too much on hits.

Exactly.❤️🙏🏼

I’ve seen this phenomenon too. A post that I think will be well received has a lukewarm response and sometimes scribbled in hurry gets so many more.

It’s such a strange phenomenon! Kind of crazy. Ha, ha.

It’s always interesting to see what posts resonate with readers and which ones land with a thud!

Yes, yes, I can relate. I always have to laugh at that. I’ll write something that I’m really proud of. The same week I’ll noticed that since I’ve been putting so much time into the one piece, I’ll be scrambling for something on another day. I’ll write about whatever comes up in my day. As my luck will have it, the piece I spent all the time on, will do okay with hits or views, but the one I scurried to pull together out of thin air, will do really well. I can’t explain it.

What’s amazing is getting a reply about something I posted years ago!

Yes, that’s always interesting. It’s always kind of funny seeing the post from out of the blue.

I’ve noticed similar trends. My top post of all time is about how annoying hiccups are, while well-research, heartfelt, and thoughtful posts fall flat. It’s quite perplexing and I can’t help but agree with your conclusion: the Web is a wild and crazy place.

Yes, I try to write what I want to write or read and not worry about the rest. The more that I find I’m trying to write to other’s tastes, the more boring I find my writing becoming. You have to write for yourself first, the audience will eventually follow.

No clues or answers from me Brian. I don’t look at stats or really care about them for my blog. Maybe WP is just messing with you 😉

Yes, I don’t pay too much attention. I look every now and again, but a lot goes into one piece doing well and another not. I’m not writing for hits alone, so I don’t get crazy about it. Yes, I want folks to see it, but I may not always be writing about popular topics. I’m writing about what I want to write.

That’s the key I think- write what speaks to you rather than trying to please large numbers of readers!

Could be various reasons, but two big factors, IMO:
A: it’s the titles you choose for your posts
B: it’s the tags you put on
All posts, title and bit of first line, go to the READER. If the title’s intriguing, people will click on it to see what the post is about. So-so title, fewer views.
The more tags and categories we put on a post, the more sections of the Reader it will go to, to be seen by more people. (However, a limit of 15, according to WP.) I’ve told many new bloggers, “No tags and your post goes to the slush pool of UNCATEGORIZED. A wasted effort. If you want other bloggers to see your posts, use C’s and T’s.”
I know Key Words factor in, too, for people doing searches for specific topics. Search for “Wordsworth poem” and every blog post mentioning that name will pop up in the search. Maybe on Page 10, but still…

Yes, I’ve updated to mention good headlines, search words and categories. I’ve heard differing opinions on the number of categories . . . but I generally agree. Do what you can to help others come to your site. I try to do some and then not worry about it. Thanks for the input.

Funny and weird! I’m impressed that you’re taking a closer look. I should do the same more often but I think you hit on the reason why I don’t….I feel like I’m entering a wacky dimension full of questions and conundrums. And then I do what I often do — flee! 🤣 Especially when I can’t understand something. Maybe I should take a closer look as you have to try to figure things out.

Nah, I just think it’s summer reading patterns and I really don’t watch hits and views too closely. It’s like white noise, something I only look at once in a while, but still funny to look closely some times. Ha ha! I know keywords and headlines help, but again I try to not go crazy.

I like that — ‘white noise’. That makes sense…running in the background…should be easy to ignore. Yeah! 😉

I’ve updated the bottom section to include good basics, good headlines and search words, and the rest is like the weather, up or down depending on the day. That’s all you can do.

Ultimately, it seems to be a guessing game. It’s like predicting the weather. The forecast may be based in fact, however the outcome is never assured.

I don’t keep a super sharp eye on my stats, but Tuesday and Thursday are days with fewer views every single week. WordPress is a strange place, Brian…

Yes, definitely strange.

Yes this is something that puzzles me as well. I never know which post will attract more readers.

I write what I want to write, but it is odd sometimes how the trends don’t make much sense to me. I’m more amazed when a post that I didn’t expect to be all that interesting to a lot of folks starts to take off. Se la vie.

the algorithm “suggests” to others what post to view and does not have anything to do with merit.

LOL – I have to go back and check, but I think I had posted about holes in my socks and people liked that versus a post I might have liked better. Good that I write what I enjoy versus going crazy over stats, because they can get you crazy if you focus on them too much.

My most read post, that still pops up after years, is called something like “Why is my daughter so annoyed with me.” There’s a testament to my parenting…You made me check my stats and the summer seems a little slower, but February and April are double all the other months. I have no idea why.

Simply put—it’s a crapshoot. I’ve long since given up the game of trying to figure out stats because it feels like a hopeless endeavor. Like most of the rest of us, the joy of writing is so much more important. Readers are just an added bonus.

I’m trying to learn how to choose keywords, I’m usually just picking something I think would be slightly amusing to find my post under .. interested in learning more on that

I feel like it’s hit or miss. I don’t think there’s a right way or wrong way. I just try to test things out and see what works. Good luck.

I have zero idea what my stats are, nor do I care, to be honest. I’ll notice some seem to get more interaction than others but it’s not at all a factor in what I write. Diff’rent strokes and all!

Yes, I find that I have to write what’s in my heart. I can’t say that I don’t look at the numbers at all, that would be false, but I don’t give them a lot of credence. It’s not why I’m a blogger!😎😎😎

For sure. I can’t write on a schedule or have set themes or whatnot and that’s great for those who do. I am a go with the inspiration when it comes so I’m erratic, at best!

I’ve increased my number posting days this year. It’s been challenging, but I’ve also been surprised with how much fun it’s been. It’s forced me to be more disciplined in my writing. Good Luck!!!!

I understand the confusion, but after 11 years of blogging, the stats and numbers don’t mean anything to me. If I have a circle who interact continually then I’m thrilled. I’m also like Dale, posting when inspiration knocks. 🙂 Happy writing, Brian!
