I think I’ve found the meaning of life. It was right in front of me. Let me explain. My wife was shopping last fall in Cape May, New Jersey. If you’ve never been there, it’s a quaint seashore town with Victorian-era mansions and small shops. I was along for the ride and was holding my own when we came upon a small wall hanging.
The sign offered a list of suggestions to solve every problem that you might ever encounter:
- To improve your mood: Exercise.
- To think more clearly: Meditate.
- To understand the world: Read.
- To understand yourself: Write.
- To help yourself: Help people.
- To learn faster: Have fun.
I must admit that a minute before entering the shop I was complaining that I was losing steam. I thought we were done, and my wife saw something in the window that she wanted to look at closer. I shook my head yes, but I was done. Of course, I walked in and there it was, the answer to all my problems.
When my wife saw me looking at the hanging, of course, she chimed in that I wouldn’t have found the answer to all my problems if we skipped the shop. Yea, yea, I let her have her laugh. And I’m not sure it touches every problem I might have, but I have to agree that it’s certainly some good advice.
If I’m in a bad mood, running or working out in the gym is usually a great place to start. If I’m trying to think more clearly, the best way to spend my time is alone with my thoughts
If I’m trying to understand things better, reading is always my go-to resource. I’ve written a lot in my blog about how writing helps me understand myself better. When I’m helping others, I always feel like I’m helping myself. And yes, to learn faster, having fun is a great advice.
Now if I could just find a sign to give my wife when she suggests stopping in one more store. Preferably it’s something better than “yes, dear.”

I love the message of that sign. So pragmatic and wise! I’m gonna save that for future inspiration when I need a kick too!

I’ve been told by certain people, that if I follow the headline, “yes, dear” all the rest of the problems will go away. Hmmm, I guess I need to follow that advice. Ha, ha.

I love Cape May. I so miss it. We used to go camping there every summer for two weeks with my sister and her family (and other families joined in sometimes). Sigh.
That’s too funny! It’s the second time in two days that I see that same list! I’m taking it as a sign that I should print it out and keep it where I can see it 😉

Yes, we spend a weekend in the fall every year with a bunch of other couples at Cape May. It’s great place to get away. It’s funny that this is the second time that you’ve seen this sign. It’s trying to tell you something. My wife tried to convince me that seeing the sign was Mother Nature’s way of telling us we need to do more shopping in Cape May. I’m not buying that message! Ha, ha.

It must be lovely in the fall. Can be hotter than Hades in the summer!!! I can’t say I blame your wife 😉 But yes, this is a wonderful message.

Yes, very nice. Shorts and sweatshirt weather, still people around, but not wall-to-wall.

Love the solutions to all of life’s problems—and sometimes the best solution of all is a simple, “Yes, dear.”

Did you buy the sign?

My wife missed the list completely. However, she loved the “yes, dear.” Ha, ha. No, we did not buy the sign, but we took a pic of it.

Great sign. I also think “Yes, Dear,” is perfect for your wife! I have bought a three signs. When I worked in a PR firm I had a sign on my desk, “To err is human, to forgive is not our policy.” “Live today, procrastinate later,” is another.”My third sign is “Remember, as far as anyone knows, we’re a nice normal family.”

Love the nice normal family one. We’ve joked about that a lot in the past. We did not buy the sign, but if we saw one that simply said, “yes, dear” I suspect we would have come home with that one. I showed my wife this post before I hit publish. She loved it the minute she saw the headline. I mentioned that I might change it, she told me to keep it. Ha, ha, what do I know!

It sounds to me like you already know, and are acting upon, the solutions to all life’s problems. 😄

Oh, I’m not sure about that. Unfortunately, “yes, dear” doesn’t come out as quickly as it should. Or I fail to follow one of the suggestions from the sign . . . and all hell breaks loose. Oh, boy. Ha, ha, no, I’m getting there slowly!

That “yes dear” goes both ways. Marriage is about serving each other. I have moments of cheerful deference to my husband, but-lest I grow arrogant about it- I also have my moments of utter selfishness! 🤣

Yes, I’m kidding. But you are so right, it’s gotta go both ways, works much better that way! Life is too hard to force your own way, has to be a loving partnership. Thanks for reading!

My wife is always right so I’m familiar with yes dear. Not too bad once you get the hang of it.

Another solution would be to not go shopping with your wife. I would never take my husband shopping with me. That would be a serious deal breaker. Lol
