Laughing when you want to cry

I love the internet.

When we were growing up, if you had a question, a really deep question that no one had thought to ask, you had to go to the library and try and dig for it or you just had to come to grips that you were never going to get your question answered.

That problem doesn’t exist nowadays.

Thanks to the web, there truly is a place for everything and everyone now. Here’s what I mean. On a lark the other day I started searching for funeral songs. After I ran my series on music a few weeks ago, fellow blogger Patti Moore Wilson of Wednesday’s Child and I were joking about music that we would want played at our funerals. Oh, I’m generally healthy, at least I think so. I could stand to lose a few more pounds and exercise more, plus I tend to drive too fast, but as far as I know, I’m good. But Patti and I were sharing what songs would be on our lists. I love the songs she’s picked.

Now, I’m known for my sarcasm in my family. Of course, I had to pick a few, well, how do I say this, more sarcastic songs. If nothing more I want to get a rise out of the priest officiating the service and of the guests who might be in attendance. If they know me, even a little bit, they shouldn’t be surprised. What’s more, I want people to celebrate and have fun, not shed tears.

So, of course, I started my search on Google and came back with more suggestions than I ever imagined. Oh sure, there were sad songs, but happy and offbeat ones too! In just a few minutes, I was able to find any kind of song that I might want.

Oh, my wife won’t like this blog. In fact, she’s going to hate it, but I’m making a list and I’m going to put them in my will that they have to be played. Ya gotta laugh, right? I know she loves me, at least most days. The last thing I want is to see her upset and tearful. So whenever my day comes, hopefully well into the future, she’ll have a lengthy list of songs to make her laugh!

Here’s a few of the songs I’m leaning towards:

For the Hell Of It:

  • Highway to Hell — AC/DC
  • If You’re Going Through Hell – Rodney Atkins
  • Celebration — Kool and the Gang
  • All Night Long — Lionel Richie
  • Up where we belong — Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
  • A Fairytale Of New York — The Pogues
  • The Rainbow Connection — Kermit the Frog, aka Jim Henson

For Laughs:

For The Tears:

  • Wind beneath my wings — Bette Midler
  • I will always love you — Whitney Houston/Dolly Parton
  • I’ve had the time of my life — Jennifer Warnes
  • Over the Rainbow — Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
  • Go Rest High On That Mountain — Vince Gill
  • A Thousand Years — Christina Perri
  • On Eagles’ Wings — Michael Joncas

I can think of a few others, perhaps “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift, or “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi. I’ll be good with whatever is played as long as the attendees don’t start bobbing their heads and chanting, “Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey, goodbye!”

What songs have I missed?

  1. Oh you DO have a wicked sense of humour, Brian!!!!! 🤣🤣 🤣Thank you so much for the share/link to my post. I have a lot of music play lists but my funeral songs list truly is my favourite and I am always adding ‘just one more song’. I see we already have a few in common (I LOVE rainbow Connection!!) and yes, I am likely going to borrow a few of yours: I’ve always loved ‘Walking on Sunshine’ and ‘A Thousand Years’ 🙂
As for suggestions: I recently added Rod Stewarts’ ‘Sailing’. I hadn’t heard it in years and it made me weep. It would be a very symbolic song for a funeral and yes, one of the things we do at a funeral is weep 🙏💕🙂

    1. Wicked sense of humor . . . it’s probably more like gallows humor, but thank you Patti. I love your list of songs, mine is just a little more on the sarcastic side. I’m really not that morbid. When my wife and I have talked about funerals, I’ve always joked that I don’t want people to cry and mourn, I want them to be happy. In the grand scheme of things, I won’t have a say in any of the music, so it won’t really matter. Hopefully it made some people laugh. Ha, ha.

  2. At the end of a funeral when people were leaving, Judy Garland came blaring over the sound system singing, “Forget your troubles, come on get happy..…” We all left with a lightened heart and a happy smile. 💕

  3. When my aunt died – she had planned out every aspect of her funeral and burial before she died – even dictating to the minster (her friend) what she had to wear. She was carried out the church to Dancing Queen by Abba

    1. Oh, no real planning here. My wife won’t listen to me anyway, especially my suggestion that my casket be taken out the church to Highway to Hell, but hey I can try. Ha, ha, I have tried to convince her that she should have my funeral in a bar, a true Irish wake, or via a dating show, where prospective new beaus have to offer her the best sympathy line as they pass my casket. She didn’t like that idea. Ha, ha, I wonder why. I do love the Dancing Queen suggestion though. Good choice.

      1. A bit of a comedian, Brian? 😝 I can imagine why your wife wasn’t happy at your suggestion of a new beau – she might just enjoy the peace and quiet for a day or two
        We’ll miss you though xxx

      2. Oh, she doesn’t always like my humor, I don’t know why? Beau or peace, yea, I suspect she would choose peace and quiet. Now I would say that I’m indispensable, but I’m sure she would have a great response back, something about needing the quiet from having lived with me!!!!!!!😎😎😒😎😎😎

      3. Well my hubby has been away now for about 6 weeks (his mum’s ill and he’s been looking after her). I’m enjoying some aspects of the peace but there’s noone to share my day with and it can, at times, be too quiet.

  4. Such a fun…and thoughtful post, all wrapped in one! I love your playlists, Brian! And Julia’s comment about Judy Garland…that’s fab. I do love the Bob Marley tune…”Every Little Thing” and the only other selection that popped to mind is Louis Armstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful World”. I love that song. 🥰

  5. We have a running joke in our family regarding my like of Kenny G. My son is a sax player. I have long told all three that I want Jeff to get a hold of a soprano sax and play some Kenny G for me… I feel confident that won’t happen!

  6. Funeral conversations never go over we’ll, especially with my daughter. They are fine with laughingly talking about putting me in a home, but the funeral conversation is too much. When I asked my daughter if she would sing at my funeral she looked at me as if I was insane. “You’re my mother! I am NOT going to sing at your funeral.” Maybe they weren’t kidding about the home thing.

    1. It’s funny, I used to hate talk about death, but now I have no problems now talking about my own funeral. My wife likes talking about my funeral, not so much her own. Ha, ha, I’m kidding. As far as a nursing home versus funeral, yes, I suspect my kids would answer the same, easier for them to imagine I guess. Or they really want to get rid of me and put in a home. That could be true too.

  7. These are fantastic. I don’t know if you’ve seen the film Love, Actually, but when Liam Neeson’s wife dies, she requests a Bay City Rollers song at her funeral. I love the scene where her casket proceeds down the aisle while Bye Bye Baby Goodbye plays in the background. 😂

    1. Oh yea, I stole the song directly from Love Actually. It’s an underrated scene. One of the best in the movie. Especially the way Liam Neeson describes his wife’s final wishes. Who wouldn’t want to be wheeled out to the Bay City Rollers!!!!!!

  8. AC/ DC’s Highway to Hell is top of my list as well Brian. I’ve also got the same bands, Shot Down in Flames as a backup. My current funeral playlist means the ceremony will be about three hours long 😂. Great post.

    1. We’ve got similar tastes Davy! I’m not sure that’s a good thing for you! Ha, ha. Hey, if it’s a party, then a three hour long ceremony wouldn’t be such a bad thing. My wife, of course, would hate to see me wheeled out to Highway to Hell. I think it would be funny. ha, ha.

  9. What a great idea to plan ahead! You had me riveted until Let It Go though. 😆😂 All the others are great, including Dolly Patron’s version of I Will Always Love You which I heard recently and it’s a very different but equally compelling take from Whitney’s remake.

    1. Not a fan of Let It Go????? Or of my gallows humor??? When I die, hopefully well into the future, I want my family to be happy. I mentioned Let it Go to my wife. She wasn’t happy with that one either. She’s definitely more of a fan of traditional funeral songs. Ha, ha.

  10. I wrote out my preferences for my funeral and posted them a few years ago. I can see now that I’m going to have to rethink my selections I particularly like Brenda’s aunt’s selection of Dancing Queen!

  11. A few suggestions: “And When I Die” – Blood, Sweat and Tears, “It’s Your World Now” – Eagles, “I’ll See You In My Dreams” and “Further On (Up the Road)” – Bruce Springsteen, “Secret O’ Life” – James Taylor. Course, if you really wanna push the envelope, how about “I Love the Dead” – Alice Cooper? 😈

  12. Oh, how funny! Rainbow Connection cracked me up the most. Great song, though. My sister and I used to sing that when we were kids, so that would make her cry for sure.

Once, when there was a lot going on over here and Hubby was rather stressed out, he asked me if I could “Put on some music or something.” I knew he meant something mellow like Jack Johnson, so instead I cranked up the volume for AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” It made him laugh, and his mood improved just like that. 🙂

  13. I love this post and your sense of humour, Brian. I also love your choice of songs and the idea of choosing your own funeral music (I hope it doesn’t have to be used just yet!) I like so many of the songs you have chosen, too, especially the Queen number – Another One Bites the Dust. I might have to pinch that one from you!

At my Mum’s funeral six years ago, we chose, amongst others, Handel’s Messiah, The Hallelujah Chorus, which boomed out over the speakers to send my Mum on her way. No one expected that. Imagine my Mum going out to the loud chorus of “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!” It was my Mum’s favourite piece of music, and she’d always be singing along to it when it was on the radio or the TV.

I’m so sorry I haven’t been able to keep up with your recent posts lately, Brian. I’ve been incredibly busy planning a massive event in London next week and have hardly had a minute to myself. I will be writing about it sometime after it’s ended, after next Saturday sometime. I hope you are well, Brian 😊.

    1. Oh, Ellie, my sense of humor is definitely warped. I know that! Ha, ha. My wife would definitely choose more traditional music. Love the story of your mother and playing Hallelujah. Ha, ha, that’s funny. Looking forward to seeing whatever you write. Good luck with your event. I know how putting on these types of things can be stressful. Lots of hurry-up and wait. No matter what, I’m sure it will go great. Best wishes.
