When I was a young man, I paid a lot of attention to the latest styles and trends. In fact, when I was first starting to work and getting paid, I wore loose pleated pants, a stylish shirt with a paisley or colored floral print tie, and a leather jacket and looked like I just walked out of a Gap, Chess King or Structure store. You might even say that I looked pretty dapper for the time.
When I became a father, though, I paid less attention to those types of things. There’s always something that seems to be a higher priority. When the kids were young, I was worried about paying for the basics like diapers and baby wipes. When they got older, it was covering the cost of braces and later it turned into helping them pay for college.
Now, I still like to look nice, but rarely spend much on clothes. One thing has stayed consistent though in my dress: No flannel.
I don’t buy it, I never wear it. My son wears it all the time. He’s the hipster in the family. Of course, if I were honest, he looks good in anything that he wears. When it comes to me, though, I don’t like the look on me and, most important, flannel brings back a lot of memories — some good, some painful, but memories all the same.
While I stay away from flannel, I find myself often pulling out an old flannel shirt that used to belong to my father. The shirt serves as a great reminder to focus on the good in life. You can read more on the memories flannel brings back to me in my latest blog, Flannel and my father, on The Heart of the Matter blog site. I hope you like my story. I think you’ll you appreciate the other writers and blogs posted there as well. There’s always a great read on what really matters in life. Thanks for visiting my site!

Hey Victoria, I was stylin’ in the 90s. Classic preppy look. I need to find some old pics. I looked good . . . and then something happened. Oh yea, life. Ha, ha. This story will make you laugh: my son bought some vintage clothes recently and one of them was a Paul Simon t-shirt. When I told him that one of my friends used to have the exact same shirt, he couldn’t stop laughing. I’m not sure if it was because he thought I was really cool (doubtful) or very old (likely). ππππππ€£

I love that! Our dear daughter recently lifted a ‘Blondie’ vintage t-shirt from my drawer of workout clothes…thinking it was new, and trendy. Nope…I told her…it’s mom’s…old and trendy? Maybe! That’s how we know we’ve turned a corner — when stuff from ‘our time’ becomes cool. Wowzers! πππ

Those pics might break the Internet! They will at least take down HoTM for how totally uncool they are. ππππ

Oh golly — now I’m laughing out loud…for real…take down the HoTM site, you say? Now we just want to see them EVEN more.
Wynne…when you get here, I think we need to discuss launching a little campaign to post ‘back in the day’ pics…I feel a theme coming on! π€£π€£π€£

Noooo, not the flannel??? π² Brian, you are too comical. Hey, just because you had to deal with the braces, diapers, and college expenses, you can still look like the dapper dude you are. πππ Now, your father’s shirt is a different story; so many memories behind that treasure. But your take on flannel is like my take on these crocs a lot of folks are wearing these days. While they may be comfortable, they remind me of clown shoes…but that’s just me! π€‘ Cheers to flannel and crocs…or not! LOL π€£ππ

OMG, yes, clown shoes, that’s exactly what I think every time I see them. A clown or swimming fins/flippers. I get the need for ease, but crocs? No way. I needed that laugh, thank you Kym.

As I sit in my blue flannel commenting on your post! LOLOLOL
I blame my husband, when he is chilling around the house on the weekend he will slip into his flannel and over the years his collection grew. So every now and then during thee winter I slip a few in my closet.
You brought back memories of those expensive money sucking diapers! UGHH don’t miss those days at all.
Headed over to Sub to your other blog, can’t wait to read it.

Money-sucking diapers. Omg, how much money did we spend on them. Youβll appreciate this. We took my son back to college recently and made a target run. I wasnβt sure which was worse loading up on dorm junk food or the cost of diapers. My eyes were hurt when I went to look at diapers. Glad I donβt have to deal with them anymore!!!!

I haven’t looked at those ridiculous prices in SO LONG! And I’m thankful for it. But my greedy college kids still have their haaand out as well and we spent an arm and a leg when moving them back in after Christmas.

When we were shopping, I was tempted to drag my son over to look at the diapers so that I could say βI gave at the office already. I donβt need to give any more. You pay todays bill!β Iβm sure he wouldnβt have appreciated that. πππ

It’s very interesting how a certain type of clothing can instantly create both good and bad memories. I myself am not a flannel fan (always thought it made me look bigger), but I certainly recall it as very popular back in the day. My grandfather wore it daily. He wore it much better than I!

Yea, my father was the same, rain or shine, warm or cold, he wore flannel. I canβt see flannel and not think of him.

Nothing like the cost of diapers to facilitate early potty training. In my day it was cloth diapersβmore environmentally friendly, but definitely more parent unfriendly. Yuk. I’d happily trade in diapers for braces any day. Or maybe even a flannel shirt.

Great post that brings back a lot of memories for me. My dad wore flannel shirts a lot. I donβt. My dad died 14 years ago and I still have one his flannel shirts hanging in my closet.

That’s great Chris. My dad wore flannel shirts everywhere . . . at all times of the year. I’m sure the idea of having a pocket had something to do with it. I’m glad you still have something of his.
